Pre-Service Training Instructors- New York City Teaching Fellows

Seeking Passionate Instructional Leaders!

TNTP seeks summer Pre-Service Training Lead Instructors for the New York City Teaching Fellows. This position is based in New York City and is available in Spring 2017.

Who We Are

TNTP is a national nonprofit founded by teachers that believes our nation’s public schools can offer all children an excellent education. Today we’re a diverse team from a wide range of fields, united by a fierce commitment to helping school systems end educational inequality and achieve their goals for students. We work at every level of the public education system to attract and train talented teachers and school leaders, ensure rigorous and engaging classrooms, and create environments that prioritize great teaching and accelerate student learning.

The New York City Teaching Fellows program is preparing a critical mass of exceptional teachers committed to a better future for the New York City students who need them most. In the last ten years, the NYC Teaching Fellows program has provided New York City public schools with over 17,000 new teachers. Fellows who successfully complete our program become full-time teachers within a few months of enrolling. They participate in an innovative, practice-based summer training program and then earn a subsidized master’s degree in education while teaching in a New York City public school. Fellows for our 2017 program will train to teach math, science, special education, bilingual education, English, and English as a Second Language.

What You’ll Do

Lead Instructors lead skill-building sessions focused on the foundational skills of pre-service training, ensuring Fellows have high quality opportunities to both learn and practice the skills. In addition, Instructors customize and facilitate sessions that support Fellows’ ability to plan and execute high-quality, Common Core-aligned instruction in their classrooms. As a Lead Instructor, you will:

  • Customize and facilitate structured daily skill-building sessions for groups of 25-50 Fellows
  • Deeply internalize Teach Like a Champion and the principles of effective practice with the techniques
  • Expertly model classroom management and Common Core-aligned instructional techniques so that Fellows understand the essential components of effective instruction, and can develop those components within their own teaching practice
  • Lead sessions that support Fellows’ acquisition of instructional planning and execution skills
  • Provide targeted, actionable feedback to Fellows as they practice foundational teaching skills – both during skill-building sessions and in their classrooms
  • Collaborate with Fellows’ coaches to determine trends in Fellow performance, and lead responsive coaching sessions that target Fellows’ highest areas of need
  • Identify and communicate trends in Fellow performance by keeping accurate records of Fellow performance
  • Implement interventions and support structures to ensure all Fellows improve their teaching practice
  • Establish and reinforce a culture of achievement that drives Fellows to ensure that all students achieve at high levels.
  • Provide leadership, support in planning, and staff development as assigned in support of pre-service training goals.
  • Lead Instructors work alongside a small team of other NYCTF staff at a NYC summer school. In 2017, the majority of our summer school locations will be in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and upper Manhattan.
