Director, Legal Affairs, Intellectual Property Litigation

Job Description:

This attorney will have responsibility for active management and oversight of all aspects of Intellectual Property ("IP") litigation and disputes, as well as other complex commercial litigation and risk management issues. This position interacts directly with Vice Presidents, Senior Directors and Directors across many areas of the business, including Finance, Legal, Corporate Communications, Government Affairs, Engineering, IT, Marketing and Corporate Strategy. Primary responsibilities for this role are setting high level strategy and processes for managing the Company's IP litigation, handling IP litigation matters, and managing an internal team of IP litigation attorneys and other legal professionals. This role also requires knowledge of and an appreciation for IP transactional issues with respect to risk mitigation, as well as an ability to handle general commercial litigation issues in partnership with the larger litigation team, as needed. The specific areas of legal risk include: IP litigation; trademark litigation (both proactive and defensive); software and technology licensing; MVNO litigation; and roaming, network share, and backhaul (competitor roaming and interconnect). In addition, the role requires experience in antitrust advising and litigation, such as antitrust compliance training, navigating government investigations and/or reviews of deals, and proactive advice to the business on mitigating antitrust risk.

Responsibilities:

This attorney will counsel executives and internal clients on IP litigation strategy and risks, manage internal lawyers and other legal professionals on IP and commercial litigation caseloads, retain and manage outside counsel, manage cost effective budgeting and fee arrangements with outside counsel (including alternative fee arrangements), review pleadings, participate in mediations and arbitrations, engage in settlement negotiations, and manage settlements internally. In addition, this attorney may be required to support general commercial litigation matters that include risk and dispute management in other business areas. This attorney must have a sense for the importance of how business goals and operations (including systems, services, products, customers and competitors) guide litigation strategy and advice.

This position reports to the VP, Intellectual Property and Antitrust, and up to the SVP, Litigation and Intellectual Property.


Qualifications:

Requirements include a law degree and at least 15-20 years of relevant legal experience, including extensive experience litigating and managing IP litigation, experience managing teams of professionals, as well as experience advising senior leaders. In addition, outstanding business judgment, strong attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills, proven ability to excel in a fast-paced environment, strong customer-oriented interpersonal skills, and a proactive approach to solving problems are required.
