Technology reporter, Japan

Job Description

Reuters is looking for an enterprising and ambitious journalist to cover Japan's electronics supply chain, from electric motors and robotics to sensors and semiconductor production equipment.

The successful candidate will join a global team of Reuters reporters covering technology and focus on how global trends like projected demand for electric and autonomous-drive vehicles, smart appliances, robots and drones are reshaping industries and investor expectations.

Despite Japan's decline as a hub for consumer electronics production, Japanese semiconductor makers and other suppliers remain crucial to the output of products ranging from Apple's iPhone to Tesla's electric sedans.

We see an opportunity for a creative reporter to follow the supply chain and connect companies to emerging trends while also digging deep into the strategic investments by established suppliers. Companies of interest on the beat would include the likes of Sony, Sharp, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Toshiba, FANUC, Murata Manufacturing and Kyocera but also smaller players like Nidec, Shinko Electric and Nitto Denko. Working with editors in Singapore and Tokyo, the successful candidate will follow the flow of innovation and investment across related sectors.

We are looking for a team player with great ideas and a demonstrated ability to build strong networks of sources. The successful candidate will have experience in coverage of companies and industries and in telling stories in a multimedia format combining graphics, video, pictures and text.

The ability to work in Japanese is a strong advantage but we will consider applicants with deep experience in coverage of related industries without working-level proficiency in Japanese.
