Language Specialist II

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Language Specialist to join our Language Services team. You will play a crucial role in coordinating and handling the final quality of assigned translations to ensure a high standard of excellence. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to communication efforts and make a significant impact within our organization.

Functions and Other Job Information:

  • Perform translation tasks, including initial translation, revision, and quality checks
  • Develop and maintain terminology
  • Ensure translation memories are updated
  • Establish and implement linguistic quality assurance processes, and globally as needed.
  • Use established tools to supervise the quality of outsourced language translations
  • Analyze language quality issues and collaborate with project management to develop improvement plans
  • Work on assigned projects by the Language Services department

Job Complexity

You will address problems of moderate scope, requiring the analysis of various factors. Your ability to think critically and apply your expertise will be crucial in resolving complex language-related challenges.

Job Knowledge

With your developing professional expertise, you will apply company policies and procedures to resolve language-related issues. Your knowledge and skills will be key in ensuring detailed communication across various projects.

Supervision Received

You will receive general instructions for routine work and detailed instructions for new projects or assignments. You will have the autonomy to exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices, resolving appropriate course of action.

Business Relationships

In this role, you work closely with colleagues within the company. While you may have occasional contact with customers or vendors, your main focus will be on establishing good relationships, both internally and externally. This will enable smooth communication for all language-related projects.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in translations, linguistics, or language studies from a recognized institution or higher education, or equivalent experience with significant translation studies.
  • Equivalent experience in another field and 2 years of translation experience (preferably in clinical translation), will also be considered in lieu of said degree.
  • If no degree, equivalent experience of 5 years in translation (mainly clinical translation).
  • Previous experience that provides the skills to perform the job (comparable to 2+ years).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Two years of confirmed translation experience (clinical translation)
  • CAT/TMS tool experience required
  • Confirmed Terminology and TM experience required
  • Confirmed skills in multitasking, time management, organization, and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite

Management Role:

You will not have any management responsibilities. You will work with your colleagues to achieve project objectives.

Working Conditions and Environment:

This position is primarily office-based, with occasional aims to site locations and domestic/international travel. You will be exposed to electrical office equipment and work in a fast-paced environment that encourages innovation and collaboration.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently stationary for 6-8 hours per day
  • Repetitive hand movement of both hands to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists
  • Frequent mobility required
  • Occasional crouching, stooping, bending, and twisting of the upper body and neck
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying (or otherwise moving) objects, including luggage and a laptop computer, with a maximum lift of 15-20 lbs.
  • Ability to access and use a variety of computer software developed both in-house and off-the-shelf
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas, with excellent listening skills
  • Frequently interacts with colleagues to obtain or relate information to diverse groups
  • Works independently with little guidance, plans work schedules to meet goals, and requires multiple periods of driven concentration
  • Performs a wide range of variable tasks decided by changing conditions and demands, with the ability to perform under stress and multitask
  • Regular and consistent attendance is encouraged
