Safety & Staff Coordinator, Headfirst Summer Camps: 2017-1751

The Position

Reporting to the Site Leader, the Safety & Staff Coordinator at Headfirst Summer Camps acts as the primary on-site resource for any and all matters related to the safety and well-being of both Headfirst Summer Camps campers and staff. The Safety & Staff Coordinator supervises and ensures the day-to-day safety of all program participants; safety is Headfirst Summer Camps’ foremost concern, and the Safety & Staff Coordinator must always prioritize safety above all else. The Safety & Staff Coordinator also acts as the on-site liaison to the Talent Department, addressing any staff questions and concerns in a timely manner, exercising empathy and discretion when necessary.

The Work

Pre-Camp Season

  • Tap into professional and personal network to help recruit and retain staff for your site.
  • Master and provide input on camp safety protocols and staff policies.
  • Attend leadership training in the late spring and/or early summer.
  • Attend and help facilitate Counselor’s trainings in late May and/or early June.
  • Participate in all required webinars and online trainings.
  • Assist with the mobilization of site (including, but not limited to, set up, equipment organization, operational & logistics planning).
  • Submit all required paperwork on time.

Camp Season

  • Work with the Site Leader to anticipate, identify, and resolve all safety-related issues at camp, communicating clearly with staff to ensure camper safety is prioritized at all times by all team members.
  • Monitor the health and welfare of campers, implementing the Headfirst Summer Camps policies, procedures, and safety protocols as necessary to ensure a safe camp environment.
  • Maintain and safeguard appropriate records, exercising professional discretion at all time in order to protect the protected personal information (PPI) and personal health information (PHI) of campers and staff.
  • Manage the camper check-in area(s), taking personal responsibility for the collection and proper handling of medication.
  • Ensure the proper staff member has their campers’ medications during the camp day when medically appropriate; manage and store campers’ medications in the camp office when medically appropriate.
  • Administer appropriate first aid and camp-approved medications as required, and manage all related paperwork, including the documentation of injuries and related conversations with parents.
  • Communicate respectfully, professionally, and clearly with camper families as required, particularly when camper medical issues arise.
  • Create and maintain a master log of injuries, treatments, updates, and parent communications for HQ.
  • Maintain, inventory, and organize all medical and first aid supplies in all proper locations on campus.
  • Take personal responsibility for communicating regularly and clearly with the necessary parties to ensure all pertinent safety/medical and staff information reaches the appropriate on-site and HQ leadership, while exercising professional discretion to ensure PPI and PHI is provided solely on a need-to-know basis.
  • Enforce camp policies on sunscreen and heat breaks (water and rest).
  • Monitor and evaluate camp health- and safety-related procedures and protocol, providing on-site and HQ leadership with prompt and detailed feedback when you believe those procedures and conditions are inefficient, ineffective, or inadequate.
  • Regularly audit all programs to ensure compliance with the Headfirst Summer Camps policies, procedures, and safety protocols, expeditiously addressing any issues as necessary to maintain a safe camp environment.
  • Triage staff questions and concerns as they arise, acting as an on-site resource and representative for the Talent Department.
  • Provide organized and detailed reports to the Talent Department regarding any staffing issues that arose during the camp day.
  • Exhibit the characteristics of a team player and leader as new tasks, projects, and responsibilities arise.
  • Participate in and help facilitate all required in-season trainings, webinars, and team meetings.
  • Attend all special events as assigned, interacting with families and assisting with set up/clean up.
  • Report any issue, question, or concern regarding the campers promptly to the Site Leader; notify appropriate on-site and/or HQ leadership immediately of any evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical conditions, individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances around campers, or any other potentially dangerous conditions or situation.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior in working with campers, campers’ families, fellow leadership and other team members, and facility partners, while upholding the Headfirst Summer Camps core values at all times.
  • Adhere to state law, Headfirst Summer Camps policies and procedures, and contractual obligations.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as assigned by the Headfirst Summer Camps Site Leader or HQ staff and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.

The Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • High school graduate – or equivalent educational experience – and more than one full year out of high school in summer 2018 (if you will be less than one full year out of high school in summer 2018, please apply to our Junior Counselor position)
  • CPR & First Aid certified; Automated External Defibrillator and First Responder certifications are preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience teaching or working with children.
  • Preferred: Completion of or pursuing a degree in a medical field (nurse, EMT, doctor etc.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully at all times and in all situations.
  • Ability to work well with a variety of age, interest, skill, and developmental levels.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, follow instructions, and properly implement Headfirst processes and policies in order to ensure the safety and emotional well-being of campers and team members.
  • Ability to approach each day and its unique challenges with enthusiasm, patience, and a sense of humor.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check subject to applicable law.
