Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a Painter to join our Facility team. The incumbent would perform all necessary activities to properly apply paint, varnish, stain, and other coating/finishes to all types of surfaces. The Painter prepares surfaces to receive coatings / finishes by cleaning, caulking, sanding, priming, and sealing materials. The incumbent would also repair and replace glass and other transparent materials used on windows, doors, skylights, and vision panels.

Hours: Monday-Friday 7:30-4:00PM, Weekends Off

  • Performs all necessary activities to properly apply paint, varnish, stain and other coating/finishes to all types of surfaces.
  • Prepares surfaces to receive coatings / finishes by cleaning, caulking, sanding, priming, and sealing materials.
  • Prepares sheetrock/blue board for paint by taping seams, or skim coat plaster of new installations.
  • Repairs and replaces glass and other transparent materials used on windows, doors, skylights and vision panels.
  • Strips, applies and repairs wall coatings, including wallpaper, vinyl, and textured materials.
  • Erects, maintains and operates staging, rigging and scaffolding following all accepted safety practices.
  • Operates, maintains and cleans hand and power tools, air compressors and painting equipment as required.
  • Mixes paint, stains and other materials.
  • Applies road and parking lot lines, symbols and lettering. Paints curbs, crosswalks and other ground surfaces as needed.
  • Protects adjacent areas from over spray, spray dust, fumes, dust and vapors by installing and maintaining barriers, ventilation and other control measures.
  • Maintains paint logs, assist in moving of furniture and ability to load/unload supplies.
  • Monitor and supervise junior staff.
  • Complete EPRS and reviews for staff
  • Provide oversight and feedback on worksite status.
  • Complete a color palette review with Leadership annually.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of practices and techniques of painting.
  • Understanding of types and uses of paints, stains, varnishes and other coatings / finishes.
  • Comprehension of tools and equipment used to prepare and finish surfaces using paints, varnishes, stains, wall coverings and textured surfaces.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, codes and regulations related to erecting, maintaining and utilizing staging, scaffolding and ladders.
  • Capability to perform all physical activities related to the duties outlined on this document.
  • Ability to follow and issue written and verbal instructions.
  • Skilled in the use of small hand tools.
  • Be able to work independently.
  • Willingness to work under exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of hospital related codes, regulations, policies, procedures and directives.
  • Comprehension of hospital systems and components.
  • Knowledge of hospital related contracts and agreements.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in painting work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.


I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school at the high school level with a major in painting may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

Special Requirements:

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Rigger's License issued by the Department of Labor and Industries (Division of Industrial Safety) may be required.
