Applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to lead activities to plan, design, develop and verify complex lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions. Leads others to evaluate customer/operational needs to define system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces. Leads analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture. Leads analyses for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory, certification, product assurance and other specialties quality factors into a preferred configuration to ensure mission success. Boeing Defense, Space, and Security (BDS) is seeking a Senior Survivability/Radiation Effects Engineer (Level 5) for El Segundo, CA.

The Senior Space Survivability/Radiation Effects Engineer will support natural and man-made radiation environment-related tasks, focusing on Single Event Effects at the piecepart, unit, and system level. The successful candidate will interface with all technical disciplines in a team environment to trade factors such as survivability, cost, schedule, weight, and technical risk. The team supports Boeing enterprise radiation design and characterization issues across satellite, manned space, missile, and aircraft platforms. This is a 1st shift position.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Lead total ionizing dose (TID) and single event effects (SEE) part and technology characterization and qualification efforts, including in-house laser SEE testing as well as heavy-ion and proton beam testing at national laboratory facilities.Â
  • Work with the Boeing Electronic Products development organization to analyze electrical designs to identify and mitigate SEE at the part and circuit level using techniques such as TMR, voting, filters, etc.Â
  • Develop and flow appropriate unit and system level requirements in early program stages.Â
  • Ensure that unit and system level designs appropriately consider radiation-related effects such as total dose , displacement damage, single event effects, internal charging, IEMP, SGEMP, and TREE.Â
  • Perform and document unit and vehicle level analyses. Plan and conduct testing at the piecepart, slice unit, and vehicle levels to support design and verify compliance with radiation-related requirements.Â
  • Interface with personnel at various radiation test facilities across the country to advocate for required test time.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship. A final U.S. Secret clearance Post Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or physics.
  • 6+ years of experience in performing Single Event Effects (SEE) tests at heavy ion and proton test facilities.
  • Experience in test and analysis of radiation effects in electronics to include total ionizing dose, displacement damage, SEE as well as dose rate effects.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • An Electrical Engineering degree is preferred.
  • Leading test teams in ion and proton testing environments.
  • Experience designing test fixtures in support of SEE testing.
  • Experience with various pieces of test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, , etc.
  • Experience working with multi-discipline engineering teams.

Typical Education/ Experience:Â

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
