The Boeing Company is seeking an Enterprise Senior Software Engineer - Compiler Expert to join our team in Mesa, AZ, Berkeley, MO, El Segundo, CA, Hazelwood, MO, Herndon, VA, Huntsville, AL, Long Beach, CA, Oklahoma City, OK, Plano, TX, or Ridley Park, PA.

We are looking for someone with expertise on compiler internals, selection of optimization settings/levels with knowledge on subsequent auto-generated object code to join our kernel development team. This position requires deep understanding of software development, processor hardware architectures, and core compiler concepts (front-end and back-end optimization, code generation, cross-compiling).

As a key technical leader on the kernel development team, you will work to deliver safety-critical capabilities leveraging compiler technology, for use across The Boeing Company. This position requires the candidate to have a full-stack mindset and be aware of continuous improvement of the software development environment, tools, and products utilized by the kernel development team.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on compiler internals, optimization settings/levels with knowledge on subsequent auto-generated object code, system-specific tradeoffs, and compiler-related tools and implementation details
  • Guide selection, customization, development, and ownership of the compiler technology utilized throughout the organization
  • Mentor early-career software engineers to enhance career growth
  • Create and organize a well-defined, estimated and prioritized set of initiatives, epics and stories to maintain a robust software development backlog for time-phasing and planning
  • Participate in daily scrums, using agile practices, to communicate clearly and openly on incremental progress and to inform the team of any help needed on impediments and roadblocks and suggest timely remedies for common ailments during retrospections
  • Foster a culture that supports diversity and inclusion
  • Think critically, and is comfortable with minimally defined problem solving
  • Embrace ambiguity and demonstrate willingness to change

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 5+ years of experience with software development and/or troubleshooting software
  • 3+ years of experience implementing software using C/C++
  • 2+ years of experience using Linux operating systems

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • Experience building, configuring, and customizing GCC and/or LLVM (clang front end)
  • Rich understanding of modern processor architectures and instruction sets, e.g., Arm v8/v9
  • Experience building, configuring, and customizing the Linux kernel and/or other operating systems
  • Experience with assembly, Perl, Python, Rust programming languages
  • Experience with software test tools such as gdb, gcov
  • Experience with Safety-Critical / FAA DO-178C software certification and software level A object-code mapping
  • Experience with Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS)
  • Experience with real-time software development for avionics systems
  • Contributor to open source software projects
  • Experience with compiler internals and implementation detail
  • Experience with configuration management of diverse systems
  • Member of current/prior Agile development team(s)
  • In depth understanding of C/C++
  • Participation in total software development lifecycle
  • Passion for open source projects and collaborations

Typical Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' experience in an engineering classification.

Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
