Legal Assistant/Paralegal - Troy Legal Location

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (details of the basic job functions):

Employ knowledge of company and legal procedures as well as principles of insurance, banking or corporate law. Work independently while assisting attorneys in the legal process necessary for the conducting company business. Review, analyze and summarize issues involved incoming litigation or administrative actions. Determine need for file documentation, obtain proofs, and clarify facts and issues. Organize, assemble and interpret records and documents. Research legal issues, policies and/or procedures. Prepare one or more of the following: briefs, motions, pleadings, mediation and arbitration summaries, legal opinions, corporate documents, depositions, medical and file summaries, exhibits, correspondence and memoranda. Review and recommend publications for acquisition within the Law Library. Maintain library budget. Act as a resource person to all level of company personnel regarding complex corporate legal matters and departmental procedures. Attend and participate in educational seminars with attorneys as required.

Originate and maintain research index systems, brief banks and inter-departmental statistics. Report developments in legislation and case law to legal staff.

Support litigation matters and act as a general litigation assistant during court proceedings. Research medical facts when necessary. Prepare trial books, contracts, assemble evidence and perform various other tasks related to court proceedings. Prepare witnesses for appearance at trials. Assist in coordinating the defense of actions brought in small claims court. Participate in all phases of the settlement process including evaluations, recommendations and negotiations. Originate and maintain expert witness files.

Attend special legislative or judicial proceedings as required. Review and summarize complex court decisions and legislative and regulatory developments impacting legal and claim procedures. Assemble data and provide input for implementation of computerized research and litigation monitoring systems. Assist in preparation of a legal periodical for distribution to the Claims department.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Pre-Law or a related field

Extensive experience as a paralegal or in a position performing paralegal functions

Knowledge of:

  • Regulatory matters, including filing reports with regulatory agencies principles
  • Company procedures and departmental functions.

Work Environment

Works in a temperature-controlled office environment

Required Qualifications (these are the minimum requirements to qualify):

Associates degree as a legal assistant, completion of an ABA approved legal assistant training program or extensive experience in a position performing paralegal functions

  • Researching, analyzing and preparing written documents and correspondence

  • Principles, methods and resources involved in conducting legal research

  • Diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of medical conditions and trauma

  • No-fault law
  • Policy construction and interpretation
  • Insurance products and services

  • Organize, plan and prioritize work
  • Research legal files and compile data
  • Competently operate a windows based PC and relevant software
  • Communicate effectively with others in a work environment and with the public
  • Research, analyze and prepare written documents, correspondence, memoranda and pleadings
