Executive Attorney

The Auto Club Group (ACG) provides membership, travel, insurance and financial services offerings to approximately 9 million members and customers across 11 states and 2 U.S. territories through the AAA, Meemic and Fremont brands. Primary Duties and Responsibilities (details of the basic job functions):

Manages the delivery of the most cost effective and highest quality legal services to Auto Club Group, it's affiliated Insurance Companies, and the persons they insure. Advises and assists with interpretation and application of proposed, existing or developing statutory or case law through preparation of research memoranda, committee assignments or direct review and advice regarding publication of claim memoranda. Provides input in developing litigation and appellate strategies which provides rational application of statutes, which will best result in development of favorable case law. Manages the Firm's Appeals Committee in order to ensure that post trial appellate activity is consistent with our long-term goals.

Ensures that the in-house attorneys zealously advocate the client's position while maintaining the highest ethical standards. Reviews and assigns all incoming litigation including identification of coverage problems, conflicts of interest, unique issues requiring special handling, matching files with ability of counsel and identification of files which may be of substantial significance to insurance law and practice. Reviews procedures to make sure all members of the staff are familiar with legal and ethical responsibilities of counsel to client, and in particular, to insure that counsel are observing those stringent ethical requirements that are peculiar to insurance house counsel. Manages the operation of satellite facilities to include budget preparation, monitoring costs, authorizing office purchases and supervising a staff of professional and clerical personnel. Directs litigation activities including training, development and supervision of attorneys involved with medical, catastrophic loss, and personal injury protection claims, by practice of preventive law through Catastrophic Claim Committee review of claims before, during and subsequent to litigation.

Manages specific administrative functions including all litigation, appellate and legal advice functions and management of satellite offices. Provides input to various upper management personnel including legal, claims and insurance in the development and implementation of long range claim litigation, insurance objectives and strategies necessary to attain those goals. Provides input to department management regarding budget preparation.

Responsible for various administrative functions including budget preparation, productivity performance standards, maintenance of records relating to departmental objectives, review of changing court docket, changes in insurance and tort law.

Manages special projects and initiatives, including Centralized Litigation Project, Large Loss Catastrophic Claims Unit, Claims Legal Counsels, Legal Alerts, and Homeowner/Property and Liability litigation.

Advises upper management in detecting and remedying problems with application and enforcement of policy language and initiating responses to legislative proposals. Advises and participates in the development of revisions to Policy forms. Maintains effective working relationships with Claims, Finance and other company business units to establish Claim/Legal settlement philosophy and claim handling strategy, procedures and policies and to ensure accurate collection and reporting of relevant business data.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervise professional and clerical staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

Significant experience (7-10 years), in insurance coverage, bad faith and large technical claims.

Leadership experience (i.e. supervising legal and claim staff).

Must have an active license to practice.

Work Environment:

Work in a temperature-controlled office environment.

Required Qualifications (these are the minimum requirements to qualify):

Education (include minimum education and any licensing/certifications):

  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Member of the State Bar of Michigan.


Trial experience and directing the activities of attorneys performing litigation casework to include:

  • major personal injury, property and other insurance industry litigation
  • appellate practice

Supervisory Practice Leader experience including:

  • organization and planning
  • leadership
  • analyzing and problem solving
  • decision making
  • coordinating and controlling major projects

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Auto Club Group
  • claim policies and practices
  • Negligence Law, No-Fault Law, Essential Insurance Act and Fair Trade Practice Act

Ability to:

  • direct and try cases in trial and appellate courts
  • communicate effectively with others in a work environment
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with court officers, administrators, other attorneys and the

general public
