Position Overview

If you are a talented technologist who has experience in Scrum or Kanban, Project Management, and Development then you have an opportunity to join the technology group at Teaching Strategies in Bethesda, MD. Working with a team of other technology leaders, product group, software and QA engineers you will run the scrum ceremonies for our industry leading SaaS products used by early childhood educators. The company is looking for a highly motivated individual that will work closely with other technology team leaders and will support the implementation of the company products roadmap.

You are a creative thinker, you love to understand the ins and outs of your organization, and you strive to find winning resolutions. You have a high level of integrity and sense of urgency to "make things happen" and will work collaboratively across project teams to achieve project goals.

The scrum master's primary responsibility is to keep the development team organized and progressing on projects to ensure teams hit their sprint goals consistently and are meeting deadlines. As a scrum master you will be able to encourage velocity, quality, and efficiency while adhering to coding, quality assurance, and project execution best practices. Lasty, the ideal candidate has implemented SaaS applications while working closely with a Product and Design team to ensure the software being delivered met the goals of the organization. The individual will be responsible as the Scrum Master for 2 scrum teams.

Specific Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate daily standups, consume the information, and utilize the information to drive the team towards outcomes against sprint goals.
  • Aid in estimation of work and task and sub-task creation. Protect the team from scope creep, over commitment of work, and ensuring achievable sprint goals and set. Provide context and inputs to Product around features, bugs, tech debt, content, and contractual commitments that should be considered for prioritization against capacity.
  • Participate in sprint reviews, capture stakeholder feedback in change request tickets, and follow through with Product Owners on priority of changes.
  • Facilitate Retrospectives and take notes on improvement areas and action items discussed. Follow up on actions and aid the team in implementing improvements.
  • Ensure that the Jira boards are kept up to date, organized, and all tickets have points and details. Ensure the board is well managed and reflects reality of the work.
  • Track sprint metrics, determine what metrics make the most sense to track for each unique scrum team, and provide detailed reports up to the Director for analysis. Work with the Director to implement changes to the scrum team based on metrics reporting to ensure projects remain on track.
  • Quickly understand overarching technology and assist the Engineering Manager in providing technical readouts to Directors
  • Assist the Product Owner in refining the Product Backlog and keeping the backlog well groomed. Utilize information gathered from the team to provide context to tickets and priority need.
  • Be an agile coach to the team by being strong promoters of best practices and informing and teaching the teams on scrum methodology. Consult with team members to work through disagreements and serve as a bridge between Product and Technology.
  • Assist the scrum team in identifying and eliminating blockers.
  • Frequently review the scrum metrics and provide suggestions on how to improve existing metrics and determine what additional metrics should be captured. Ensure teams are hitting deliverables and sprint goals.
  • Scrum masters should be fastidious note takers, ensure meetings have agendas ahead of time, help keep meetings on time, track action items and post notes and actions to confluence after meetings, and following up with action item owners on progress against assignments.

Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of experience in an Agile environment as a Scrum Master
  • Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience with managing software (product) development projects through their entire life cycle (including launch and implementation) using automated management tools
  • Prior experience as a Software Engineer or QA Engineer
  • Agile / Scrum (ACP) or Certified Scrum Master or Certified Agile Trainer
