Linux Administrator (New York City, NY)

The Role

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who have experience in Linux and Storage Administration. The appropriate candidate for this position will be a detail-oriented and organized professional. This role is expected to be a critical team-player in the Technology team.

The Team

The Information Technology Team is passionate about technology and collaboration to make a difference for our staff and Corp Members. We partner with every other team in the organization to create technology solutions that allow us to work more effectively and efficiently on the way to ensuring one day all children have access to excellent educational opportunities. To do so, we work with some of the biggest names in technology, and leverage the latest software, equipment, and expertise.

Our team is responsible for all infrastructure services for Teach For America's national and regional offices across the country, including but not limited to backups, server hardware, storage, monitoring and networking. In particular, most of the server hardware we own is by Dell, storage and backup by EMC and network gear by Cisco. We have three data centers that we manage in New York, New Jersey and Dallas, as well as about 50 regional offices, which are connected to our data centers. As a team, we are also responsible for transferring and or setting up the infrastructure services during regional office moves, which occur a few times each year.



Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Building new servers, account management, monitoring, managing EMC VNX, maintaining and providing 24x7 support to the organization's client-server environment, including:
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting and administration as required for all Linux servers, encompassing development, integration, staging, Disaster Recovery and production.
  • Strong skills in EMC VNX 5500 series or equivalent storage solution.
  • Day to Day job includes but not limited to Administrating/Managing Linux servers, creating/modifying user accounts, adding/expanding storage, installing monitoring and other software as required.
  • Account management using LDAP.
  • Part of on call rotation and Respond to alerts and notifications promptly.
  • Keep documentations up to date as well as write new documents as and when required.
  • Work with Software Developers to manage, maintain, and install applications.
  • Work with other teams to assist in configuration and maintenance of servers.


Prior Experience

  • About 3 to 5+ years of operational experience
  • RedHat certification or higher, on track or qualified experience


  • Experience as a Linux Systems Administrator, RedHat Enterprise Linux is preferred but not a requirement.
  • Storage experience with EMC VNX 5500 series or equivalent Storage solution.
  • Experience with High Availability, LDAP, DNS, TCP/IP Networking, internet technologies (forward and reverse proxies, Apache, and Tomcat) and monitoring software like Nagios.
  • Working knowledge of MySQL/Oracle/PHP and DevOps tools preferred.
  • Experience with shell and Perl scripting.
  • Experience with Dell servers and components.
  • Experience in working with remote team members preferred.
  • Experience with Avamar, VMware and Big-IP F5 a plus.

Work Demands

  • Some weekend and evening work required.
  • Work is performed in Teach For America's National Headquarters in New York City, NY.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to our datacenters a few times in a year


  • Bachelor's degree preferred from an accredited university/college BS degree in Computer Science or related field and about 5+ years of operational experience
  • RedHat certification or higher, on track or qualified experience
