Elementary Content Coach - Temp, Part-time (Chicago-NWI)

The Role

Teach For America Chicago-Northwest Indiana is seeking several content coaches to work with our 1st year corps members through Learning Communities. For this role, we're looking specifically for someone with Elementary teaching experience to support our Elementary corps members

Content Coaches will design & facilitate monthly sessions from their start date until around April of 2018. Leaders will work to create a productive and collaborative culture in their working group, use a variety of methods to transfer new knowledge and skills to their teachers, and facilitate their groups' understanding and application to their practice. We are currently looking for 3 (elementary, ECE, and Secondary Diverse Learning) Leaders for this school year to support groups of teachers working at schools and centers with similar educational philosophies or approaches.

With a local member base of over 3,000, including 1,100 teachers, 90 school leaders, system level leaders, and non-profit leaders, and a staff of 35, we are positioned to work alongside the Chicago-Northwest Indiana community to ensure that the students of today become leaders of tomorrow.

Learning Communities

As part of the 1 CM experience, Content Teams aim to develop CMs into strong disciplinary practitioners who are on track to reach their academic and personal growth goals with students aligned to transformative visions and long-term plans. CMs will collaborate with each other and staff to improve their disciplinary knowledge, skills, and mindsets and share content related strategies.

Detailed Information

Content Teams will:

  • Be comprised of 20- 25 CMs and be facilitated by one experienced teacher (Content Coach)
  • Meet for approximately 2 hours each month
  • Begin with 15-20 minutes of skill-building and resource sharing (unit plan samples, online resources)
  • Continue with 20-30 minutes of discussion/ practice (theme, study, prioritized objectives, EUs, etc.)
  • Finish with 45-60 minutes of supported work time and continued collaboration

CM Outputs

CMs' unit plans will include a transformative, compelling and purposeful vision that stems from their overall classroom vision. Unit plans will outline prioritized standards for the unit and break these standards down into lesson-level objectives. Unit plans produced will vary based on the CMs' center philosophies and personal teaching styles. Some unit plans will also include aligned activities for prioritized standards, thematic plans, content webs, and/or initial study plans for corps members using the Project Approach.



Content Coaches Leaders will be hired, trained, and managed by Anajah Roberts, Managing Director, 1st Year Corps Experience. Content Coaches will work with other Chicago-Northwest Indiana staff members and National Teach For America staff members. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate skill-building and collaborative work time
  • Communicate with corps members by email between sessions to support their progress aligned with focus from previous session
  • Review corps members' pre and post work and providing constructive and reinforcing feedback to corps members
  • Attend trainings and prep sessions as agreed upon
  • Partner with staff members to address specific instructional gaps
  • Collaborate with staff members to debrief following sessions to ensure we're meeting outcomes and providing information about corps members' progress so there is continuity in the support we provide them
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through reflection and analysis of corps member and staff feedback.


Ideal Candidate for this position would have:

  • A deep belief in Teach For America's mission and the potential of students in low-income communities, and a knowledge of Teach For America's Teaching as Leadership framework and principles
  • Experience as a corps member is very helpful, but not required
  • A desire to continuously develop professionally and an openness to feedback
  • A track record of being able to manage various work streams
  • A demonstrated personal responsibility over one's success

Previous Teaching Experience:

  • Strong content knowledge and instructional skills
  • Proven ability to reach ambitious academic and cultural outcomes with students

Facilitation Skills:

  • Experience facilitating groups of learners towards applying new knowledge and skills
  • Engaging and comfortable speaking to small groups
  • Ability to invest CMs in their growth as educators
  • Ability to build culture and community
  • Ability to keep CMs on task during independent work time

Analysis/Coaching Skills:

  • Enthusiasm for supporting beginning teachers and a belief in their potential
  • Ability to coach CMs to meet outcomes in sessions
  • Willingness to collaborate with staff to identify, size, prioritize and address gaps

Work Demands:

  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required
