Position Purpose:

Drives global category strategy for Ocean Freight and Air Freight, acting as a single point of contact for suppliers across the enterprise. This leader will provide a disciplined framework to guide strategic activities including category spend assessments, identification of opportunities to further leverage consolidated spend, and supplier consolidation to optimize the balance of NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier) and direct carriers utilized.

Enables effective category management through the execution of six core functions:

1.     Market Intelligence – perform trend analysis, forecasting, and evaluation of pricing/rate indices and cost drivers to understand impact

2.     Demand / Supply Planning – examine current demand at an aggregate level and plan for future supply requirements holistically

3.     Category Strategy – analyze internal factors and external market dynamics to establish a strategic direction for Ocean Freight and Air Freight

4.     Strategic Sourcing – leverage a multi-step process to execute sourcing initiatives that support overall category strategy

5.     Process Improvement – evaluate existing processes and drive innovation to remove inefficiencies and reduce time or resource cost

6.     Supplier Relationship Management – establish supplier KPIs and monitor supplier performance in order to reduce costs and mitigate risks

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage relationships with internal stakeholders and external third-party service providers. Includes, but not limited to, Freight Forwarders, NVOCC, Customs Brokers, etc. Direct involvement with third parties to ensure shipping requirements, bookings, document compliance, ocean carrier allocations, tracking & tracing, and all facets of logistics related to international trade meet Sysco Corp. requirements and expectations

  • Maintain a single source of truth for ocean lane data, tracking historical rates and volumes for all ocean freight moves. Identify and maintain a regular cadence with all Sysco team members responsible for overseeing ocean freight within their respective business unit / segment. Identify opportunities for streamlined reporting and enhanced visibility to historical data via enhancements to existing tools (i.e. Export Mod). Conduct a monthly review with core team members to validate container volumes and rates. Monthly business reviews will also include air freight trend analysis.

  • Develop category profiles informed by market intelligence, organizational structure and demand / supply plans. Create the annual forecast and category plans for Ocean Freight and Air Freight. This includes financial oversight and accountability of the Inbound and Outbound revenue and costs associated with ocean and air freight shipments, ensuring the identified targets are being achieved. Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities related to process standardization and centralization, order management, data entry, master data maintenance and spend visibility.

  • Develop a multi-year improvement plan addressing all aspects of Ocean Freight and Air Freight category management including, but not limited to, inbound planning, global trade management, freight payment, claims and freight revenue management. Establish standard operating procedures for both Sysco Corp stakeholders and third parties. Identify and drive change management activities required for increased centralization and standardization of operations.

  • Manage the Strategic Sourcing process for global import and export third party service providers. This includes, but is not limited to, rate and contract negotiations, qualitative and quantitative analysis and assessments, provider recommendation and selection, and implementation for Ocean and Air Freight sourcing activities. Transition strategic responsibilities away from siloed team members within the business units / segments, enforcing accountability at the global level.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in Supply Chain. An advanced degree is an asset.

Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in Sourcing & Procurement for direct spend, spanning from interactions with suppliers, internal customers, and stakeholders to spend and contract analysis, wave planning and process improvement. Experience in master data management and order management solution implementation would be an asset.
