Our history with local and regional jurisdictions and tribal governments includes plan review, field inspection, and interim building official.

Stantec's Phoenix office is looking for a Mechanical/Plumbing Plans Examiner who is responsible for approving mechanical and plumbing construction plans for compliance with commercial and residential projects such as new construction, tenant improvements, remodels, additions, and small structures based on applicable codes, ordinances, and administrative directives which are enforced by the jurisdictions that Stantec Consulting Services provides services.

Your Duties Essential Functions:

  • Advises registrants and applicants by phone or in person regarding construction conformance to the building, plumbing, and mechanical codes with related regulations and directives.
  • Researches and enters technical data as required for sites, permits, or plans information into Word documents, various client software programs, and Microsoft Office files.
  • Examines submittal documents for plumbing system and mechanical equipment compliance with current adopted jurisdictional codes.
  • Performs simple engineering computations to check design of systems pertaining to mechanical and plumbing
  • Identify deficiencies in plumbing and mechanical submittal documents and communicates procedural requirements for correction of these documents in compliance with jurisdictional codes and standards.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding mechanical and plumbing designs from interested parties including, but not limited to, other plan reviewers, inspectors, registrants, owners, and contractors.
  • Facilitates conference calls and meetings as necessary to resolve issues and achieve clarity regarding design data, code interpretations, and life
  • Researches, recommends, and approves alternative construction methods and options to resolve issues and accommodate the use of innovative designs within the scope of authority assigned and approved by the jurisdiction and international codes.
  • Creates and processes written compliance reports and enters technical data including approvals and denials into jurisdictional software systems.
  • Maintains knowledge of code updates and ordinance changes and attends seminars for continuing education on code and ordinance changes.
  • Visits construction sites of large projects at the request of the client to provide assistance and direction in application and interpretation of jurisdictional codes for field conditions.
  • Assists Project Manager Assistant and department management in technical and customer problem resolutions for all projects.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Three (3) years of experience reviewing plans, schedules, and other data for compliance with mechanical and plumbing systems for major structures. Additional classes in mechanical engineering desired to show proficiency in mechanical and plumbing controls, designs, standards, and general practices. Other combinations of experience and education meeting the minimum requirements may be substituted.
Knowledge of:
  • IMC and IPC codes, IAPMO, ordinances, directives, including building, mechanical, and plumbing as applied to new and existing residential construction projects and moderately complex commercial projects.
  • Mechanical and plumbing equipment, fixtures, materials, general standards and methods, and design concepts relating to projects at all stages of construction.
  • National mechanical and plumbing codes and standards and related laws and ordinances as stipulated by the jurisdiction.
  • Mathematical principles required to perform related technical calculations.

Ability to:
  • Read and accurately interpret simple and complex plan designs and specifications.
  • Objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements and related standards in accordance with department policies.
  • Cooperate with internal and external Stantec clients and the general public.

  • Observe and monitor site construction for compliance with operational procedures.

  • Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
  • Organize, distribute, and maintain jurisdictionally approved documents and directions (plans, permit files, stop work orders, ordinance violations, and miscellaneous documents).
  • Perform simple engineering computations using mathematical methods as required per mechanical and plumbing codes to interpret and determine compliance.
  • Bend and stoop continually or repeatedly, raise arms above your shoulders, climb up/down ladders, traverse construction sites at various stage of completion, work at elevated heights (above 10 feet), and/or travel across uneven ground during inspection work.
  • Provide written, electronic, and oral communications to clients and owners as well as maintain and organize those records.

Additional Requirements:

Must possess two (2) or more of the following certification(s):
  • ICC Mechanical Plans Examiner or ICC Mechanical Inspector
  • ICC Plumbing Plans Examiner or ICC Plumbing Inspector
  • IAPMO Mechanical Inspector and IAPMO Plumbing Inspector
Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
Driver's license with satisfactory driving record required.
