Product Manager, Digital Ads

Whether we’re helping developers get answers to their questions or find a new job, we build products that make millions of developers' lives better every day. As an Ads Product Manager, you’ll work with our passionate Developer, Design, Marketing, and Ad Sales teams, bridging the gap between the technical and business worlds. Ads are an important part of our business at Stack Overflow. In the past we’ve run contests and developer surveys through our ad platform, but as one off projects.

This is an awesome opportunity for an entrepreneurial Product Manager to build a team and product line from the ground up. The Ad Sales PM will be successful if they:

  • Are knowledgeable about the ads space and are excited about building a new product and a new team.
  • Understand that their role has few restraints, and are ready to take advantage of that.
  • Embrace the challenges of searching for product market fit. Our ads products will be an additive experience for developers on Stack Overflow.

You’ll have the opportunity to do a lot at Stack Overflow, and you can expect during the first year:

  • First Month: Get onboarded and brought up to speed on our current roadmap and past experiments. You’ll spend most of your time learning about our products and customers, and building a rapport with the product, ad sales, design, and marketing teams, as well as starting to sketch out your initial plans.
  • Next 3 Months: Start piecing together the roadmap. Our Director of Ad Sales will want to introduce you to key customers, you’ll spend time talking to developers in the Stack Overflow community, and you’ll begin implementation of your high priority projects.
  • Next 6 months: You can expect to be be the primary owner of new ad initiatives. You’ll be involved not just in product development, but in the ongoing relationship with paying customers and the community, and in improving our internal development processes.

We like to work in public. Not only does that mean being open with the company about what your team is building, but also bringing in the community as soon as we’re able. Some examples of big projects/discussions we’ve had with the community recently:

Skills & Requirements

What you’ll do:

Conduct market research to determine needs of clients while balancing the company’s requirements of a positive user experience
Create a product roadmap to support Ad Sales goals and strategies
Help make build/buy decisions concerning the development of new products, features, and enhancements
Define and monitor metrics to determine the effectiveness of new features, and administer split tests to learn whether a change is an improvement
Partner with the Director of Ad Sales when building your roadmap, product positioning, messaging, and go-to-market strategies
What we want to see:

Experience managing digital products, preferably for a media company or agency
You know programmers and want our ad partners to reach engage with them on their terms
You’re knowledgeable about product development methodologies and database/business intelligence concepts
Experience working closely and collaboratively across multiple departments such as engineering, design, operations, and sales
Ability to interact comfortably directly with both customers and internal teams
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to roll up your sleeves to get the job done
Understanding of digital ad-serving technologies
Solid organizational, project management and time management skills
