Traffic Signal Inspector

Underdirect, or general supervision, this position will be responsible for providingcomplex field inspection, surveying, and evaluations to traffic signalizedintersections and related equipment in order to verify safety, maintenance,conditions, functions, and quality of the Customers signal systems.

Jobduties include:

  • Inspectsassigned City infrastructure, systems, and equipment for maintenance needs andrecommends appropriate actions; assists in developing work plans, procedures,and schedules.
  • Evaluateand document current conditions of all existing and new traffic signalequipment.
  • Inspectsand evaluates work in progress and upon completion to assure thatinstallations, inspections, repairs, maintenance, and project activities areperformed in accordance with City standards and specifications.
  • Assistsin coordinating, overseeing and personally participating in all assignedprograms, including inspecting, installing, maintaining, and repairingactivities of Customer traffic signal and control systems to ensure safe andefficient access for the public.
  • Providetechnical and specialized assistance to the Field Supervisor.
  • Providestechnical support to assigned traffic signal field staff; participates inperforming routine to complex and specialized installation, inspection,maintenance, and repair work on assigned Customer traffic signal and streetlighting infrastructure and systems.
  • Performsroutine to complex electrical work such as repairing signal equipment, programmingsignal controller equipment, and installing and modifying equipment.
  • Observessafe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment asrequired; may participate and assist in coordinating safety training.
  • Maintainsaccurate records and logs of daily activities, using appropriate computersoftware applications.
  • Respondsto and performs emergency repairs and other emergency services as necessary.
  • Performsother duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledgeof:
  • Fundamentalconcepts associated with the inspection of traffic signal systems.
  • Principles,methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the troubleshooting,preventative maintenance, and repair of devices used in traffic signals and streetlighting.
  • Componentsand parts of electronic and electrical devices used in traffic controlequipment.
  • Basicdesign and construction practices and methods of traffic signal and control andstreet lighting systems, is required.
  • Principles,methods, and practices in the design of traffic signals and signal phasing, ispreferred.
  • ApplicableFederal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Occupationalhazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work.
  • Safetyequipment and practices related to the work, including safe driving rules andpractices.
  • Basictrigonometry, geometry, and algebra as applied to routine engineeringcomputations.
  • Modernoffice practices, methods, computer equipment and applications related to thework.
  • Techniquesfor providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with thepublic, vendors, contractors, and City staff.


Abilityto:
  • Readand interpret engineering plans, technical drawings, specifications, and maps.
  • Applytechnical knowledge and follow proper traffic signal operation practices andprocedures.
  • Overseeand participate in installation, inspection, maintenance, and related projectsin the assigned functional area(s).
  • Plan,schedule, assign, and oversee activities of traffic signal and controlinstallation, inspection, maintenance, and repair personnel.
  • Inspectthe work of others and maintain established quality control standards.
  • Trainothers in proper and safe work procedures.
  • Identifyand implement effective course of action to complete assigned work.
  • Safelyand effectively use, operate, and maintain equipment and tools required for thework.
  • Usecomputers and software used in traffic signal controllers.
  • Determinepriorities and make independent judgments in emergency situations.
  • Maintainaccurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • Operatea motor vehicle safely.
  • Followdepartment policies and procedures related to assigned duties.
  • Give,as well as, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Organizeown work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.


Educationand Experience:

Anycombination of training and experience that would provide the requiredknowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain therequired qualifications would be:
• Equivalentto Associate of Arts degree in civil engineering, drafting, surveying, orrelated field and four (4) years of experience in installation, inspection,maintenance, and/or repair of traffic signal and street lighting devices,including one (1) year of lead experience overseeing field crews.

Licensesand Certifications:
  • Possessand maintain a valid International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level III Traffic Signal Technician Certification.
  • Possessand maintain a valid International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) TrafficSignal Inspector Level I (Florida Edition)
  • Possessand maintain a valid Master Electrician License.
  • FDOTMOT Certification
  • ValidFlorida State Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.
