Software Developer, Production Infrastructure

Shopify is the world’s fastest growing commerce platform and we have no plans to slow down. We receive more than 87 million unique visitors each month and serve billions of requests per day. We’re on a mission to scale our platform while simultaneously improving performance, reliability, and resiliency. To do this, we need the help of dedicated, methodical, and versatile engineers who care deeply about performance. Operating on this level is hard but incredibly rewarding.

To be successful in this role, the majority of these statements should resonate with you:

  • You are a systems-level thinker who can work anywhere in the stack, from right beside the OS and upwards
  • You’d consider yourself a low-level generalist who is comfortable with multiple languages such as C, Ruby, and Go
  • You have experience in planning, deployment, and maintenance of large Linux installations
  • You have experience with a variety of open source software including nginx, redis, and memcached
  • You have experience building large distributed systems at scale
  • You enjoy research and figuring out how entire pieces of the stack work
  • You aren’t afraid to work in a high-stakes environment where things break
  • You are extremely methodical and disciplined, yet thrive in dynamic environments

It'd be great if you have experience with:

  • Networking with Arista or Juniper gear
  • MySQL administration and performance tuning
  • Proficiency in the prevention, detection, and mitigation of DDoS attacks
  • Performance tuning of Ruby on Rails applications
  • Amazon Web Services and Heroku
  • Redis or other NoSQL data stores
  • Splunk or other log aggregation tools

You'll be working on things like:

  • Diving deep into the systems we are currently using to evaluate and determine how future systems will fit in
  • Building and growing our Docker-based internal cloud (PaaS)
  • Building on technologies and practices such as mcrouter, Kafka, twemproxy, and Vitess
  • Profiling and debugging at scale
  • Evaluating and deploying next generation distributed data stores such as Cassandra and etcd
  • Helping us build out our second and third data centers and delivering world-class geographic resiliency
