Shift

Strategic Finance & BD Associate / Manager

About Shift
We believe car buying should be fun, fair, and accessible to everyone. We’ve set out to transform an industry, using technology to bring transparency and convenience to the car buying process.

And we aren’t stopping there. We aim to bring that same transparency and convenience to car ownership too, with payments, maintenance, and insurance in one easy app. At Shift, we’re building the tools that empower people to buy, own, and sell the cars that make life go.

As the Strategic Finance & BD Associate/Manager, you’ll be responsible for working directly with Shift’s Founder, George Arison, on major business development and partnership projects, key strategic and investor relations projects, fundraising, and other major initiatives. The role will provide significant direct exposure to Shift’s investors and senior external partners, and it will draw on your analytical and strategic thinking skill set to drive toward best strategic decision-making and help Shift reach key milestones in its growth.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • Create and build successful relationships with key partners outside of Shift in finance, insurance, automotive (OEM), and technology
  • Constantly identify, pursue and close partnerships to strategically expand Shift’s existing business
  • Take the lead on fundraising and investor relationship efforts including: managing fundraising process, assessing investor model, and engaging with investors as part of the diligence process
  • Develop, advocate and proactively drive strategic projects for Shift, including working with George on major initiatives he is overseeing (e.g. brand positioning, establishing new lines of business)

Candidates who might be a good fit should have:

  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience at a late stage venture capital firm, private equity firm, investment bank, or management consulting firm
  • Excellent analytical / modeling skills, and an understanding of how to build a story with data.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to cultivate relationships with senior external partners in the automotive ecosystem and with potential investors
  • Intelligence and determination. Experience is less important than sheer intellectual horsepower, creativity, and organizational skills; this role offers a lot of opportunities for new experiences, growth and development
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational abilities
  • Ability to make thoughtful, actionable recommendations without significant supervision

Bonus if you have:

  • Experience with direct investing and/or at a technology company in a business development, finance, or strategy role.

On diversity
Our company depends on balance and equality — between buyers and sellers, among employees, and in our relationships with customers.

Our mission to evolve car ownership and transform an industry is a challenging one. It can only be achieved by a team of diverse problem-solvers — engineers, designers, business people — from the same broad demographics as our customers.

Why join now?
We’ve built a small but highly talented team backed by $120 million in funding from investors like DFJ, Goldman Sachs, and BMW iVentures. We’ve got product-market fit, but there’s still a ton of room to innovate and make your mark on the product and on the company.

Shift is the Bay Area’s #1 seller of used cars with $100 million in cars sold per year. We’re serving most of California and are gearing up to scale to new markets. With a solid business model and no clear winner in our space yet, this is a hugely exciting time to join the team.
