Job Description

Scality, a leader in cloud storage and vendor of high performance distributed solutions, is searching for a Release Engineer to join our international team of talented and motivated software engineers building a fully automated continuous delivery pipeline.

You will create high quality extensible, reusable, maintainable, and high-performance software components under demanding time-to-market constraints. In addition, the Release Engineer acts as a guardian of technical consistency, keeping the overall strategy and “big picture” of the delivery pipeline in mind.

You will be working in the area of large-scale systems. Extensive knowledge and practical experience using Linux systems at scale is a key requirement of the role. The candidate must demonstrate expertise in at least one of the following fields: multi-threaded programming, performance tuning, or high availability system design and possess diverse work experience in areas such as cloud computing, virtualization, web, distributed systems and networking.


At a minimum, a candidate should have the following knowledge and skills:

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent field

  • A minimum of 4 years of software development experience

  • Fluent in English

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to design and maintain scalable and highly available tools

  • Proficiency in Python and ability to produce high quality code

  • Ability to review teammates' work and provide valuable feedback

  • Notions of asynchronous programming (twisted/asyncore), a plus

  • Comfortable with testing. The candidate has to master the testing theory as well as the associated tooling (py.test and/or unittest and/or nosetests)

  • Strong knowledge of Cloud technologies, Linux environments networking and filesystems

  • Comfortable with containerization technologies (Docker and/or LXC)

  • Comfortable with cloud IaaS (Openstack and/or EC2)

  • Familiarity with modern software engineering methodologies

    • Infrastructure as code

    • Continuous integration, delivery, deployment and monitoring

  • DevOps culture and familiarity with modern software engineering tools

    • Distributed source code management (e.g., git)

    • Build automation (e.g., Buildbot, Jenkins, Travis-CI, Circle-CI)

    • Configuration management (Salt and/or Ansible)

  • Knowledge of agile software development processes and project management methodologies, a plus

Leadership and Communication Skills:

As a Scality Release Engineer, you'll be responsible for continuously improving the tooling used by Scality's developers on a daily basis. This implies :

  • Engaging with individual Feature Teams on a per-need basis, interfacing between the developers and management as well as being a technical adviser and providing the Release Engineering perspective and best practices.

  • Ability to maintain an open communication channel with the Core Engineering team to continuously gather their needs and the issues they encounter.

  • Ability to market and promote your tools to maximize the adhesion of the core engineering.

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Curious and open-minded, comfortable sharing knowledge and able to create synergies between different teams

  • Good communication skills and teamwork: an excellent listener, as well as ability to provide clear and organized documentation for all work performed

  • Mentoring new and/or more junior developers, but also provide constructive feedback for all the members of the team.

  • Passionate and keeps abreast of advances in technology: anticipates technological evolutions and trends; owns the long-term product vision.
