Sports Reporter - Raiders beat

Raiders beat writer

Mission: To provide the region’s most accurate and comprehensive news coverage of the Oakland Raiders, both on and off the field. The Chronicle’s sports reporters are expected to be leading experts on their beats -- breaking news and taking readers behind the scenes to create the best multiplatform report in the region.

Emphasis: Report. Analyze. Engage.

The Raiders reporter is a relentless digger and conveyor of information. Breaking news should be digital-first, followed by authoritative analysis across SFGate.com, SFChronicle.com and print products. Find the story, then tell it through the written word, video and data. At all times, the reporter must engage readers through digital, social and print media.

Expectations: The Raiders reporter is expected to work with his or her editor to break news and provide comprehensive, innovative coverage of their beat. This includes investigative/enterprise reporting, games stories and analysis, video, data visualization, blogging, and social media.

Sourcing is critical. Reporters should cultivate new sources on a regular basis, while growing their list of contacts. Above all, they must regularly scoop the competition.

The beat reporter must also be up to date with news in the NFL to keep readership abreast of what’s happening in the wider world of football.

Work flow: The sports work day begins by 9 a.m. and ends when the final edition is put to bed. Due to the late nature of sports events, working hours need to be flexible and will often include late nights and weekends. The job includes late nights and weekend work throughout the year, and includes heavy travel during the NFL season.

Success: The Raiders reporter’s success is measured by breaking news, conceptual trend scoops, and growing readership. Speed, quality and quantity go hand-in-hand.
