Attire while on adventure- The Society has a very conservative grooming policy. Tattoos may not be visible or must be appropriately covered while on duty. Jewelry may be worn if it does not detract from a well-groomed look or create a safety hazard. No facial or tongue piercing.

We are looking for dynamic individuals who can provide our guests with an exceptional customer service experience. Requirements include a positive attitude, ability to take initiative, be a team player and have the ability to communicate effectively with guests and co-workers and an eagerness to put your passion for wildlife to work.

  • *Opportunities for this job posting are for our Retail Operations team. These positions will include working as a Food Service Clerk and/or a Merchandise Sales Clerk.**

Our conservative grooming policy includes:

  • * Hair color must be of a natural tone and in keeping with a dress policy of moderation.
  • * Tattoos may not be visible.
  • * Fingernails must be kept clean and well trimmed, not excessive in length and nail polish should be well-maintained and professional in appearance.
  • * Jewelry – Earrings – Two per ear are allowed so long as at least one is a stud. No other visible piercings are allowed.

Applicants must be able to work a very flexible schedule to include weekends (Saturday AND Sunday) and holidays, weekdays and nights. Weekday availability highly desired.

Desirable qualifications include prior work experience in a high volume, fast paced Food Service or Retail environment and ability to operate a cash register accurately/efficiently. Hours scheduled per week will vary depending on the season.

Job Requirements: PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Food Service Clerk performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation, and pursues green/conservation practices when feasible. The Food Service Clerk under supervision, prepares, serves and sells food items. This position reports to the Food Stand Lead, Supervisor and Manager.

A Food Service Clerk is assigned and responsible for one or more areas of food preparation, service, sales and maintenance. This class is distinguished from positions in the Merchandise Sales Clerk class in that the former provides food and beverages to guests in restaurants as opposed to merchandise items sold in gift shops.


  • Prepares and sells food items
  • Assists with daily preparation of food items as needed
  • Assists with the daily set-up and closure of assigned location
  • Operates food service equipment and machines safely
  • Assists with maintaining a safe and sanitary work area
  • Keeps all necessary food items and supplies stocked
  • Practices safe food handling procedures
  • Follows cash handling protocol and procedures
  • Operates a cash register and handles cash accurately
  • Make Customer Service a top priority
  • Provides information to guestsor directs to a knowledgeable source
  • Professionally handle difficult situations with employees or guests
  • Good work ethics and meets Organization performance standards
  • Assists new personnel as needed
  • Assists Lead, Cooks, Manager and Supervisor as needed

  • Serves food and beverage items to our guests
  • Operates cash register efficiently and accurately

  • Cleans floors, work surfaces, employee restrooms, equipment and all areas in their assigned location
  • Adheres to sanitation and safety practices
  • Understands and follows procedures for inventory control, stock rotation and waste control
  • Assists with cycle and period end inventory as needed
  • Assists with training of new personnel as needed
  • Understands and follows both written and verbal directions effectively and efficiently
  • Assists with period end inventory as needed

  • Adheres to the Environmental Health Department standards
