Senior Accountant, Accounting Operations

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Accountant, Accounting Operations is a supervisory position, having controllership responsibility over all shipboard revenues and expenses, marine related expenses and/or concessionaire revenues and expenses for assigned ships under the Royal Caribbean Brands. This person will be expected to become the subject matter expert on certain aspects of the Hotel, Vessel or Concessionaire operations of the Royal Caribbean Brand(s) and is considered a stand in for management in their absence. This person is responsible for the development of and compliance with accounting policies and principals as well as departmental procedures. This position requires extensive interaction with shipboard financial personnel, Operating and Financial groups, Information Technology, Purchasing [incl. Fuel Purchasing], Treasury, Guest Port Services, Human Resources, external vendors, actuaries, insurance plan administrators and/or revenue partners and Accounting Management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervises one to three Staff Accountants and/or Clerks to ensure adherence to Sarbanes Oxley internal controls, procedural / accounting policies and achievement of departmental goals.
  • Applies accounting concepts to write position papers on current and suggested accounting treatment for specific hotel or vessel related transactions for the purpose of developing company accounting policies / practices.
  • Works directly with upper management on special projects as assigned.
  • Develops processes, workbooks, training / instructional manuals and other tools, for use by shore-side and/or shipboard personnel, which is essential for the timely and efficient recording of financial information.
  • Determines proper accounting and provides instructions on recording hotel or vessel related transactions to shore-side and shipboard staff.
  • Works in conjunction with Accounting Management, Operations, and Legal with respect to accounting and financial transactions during revenue partner contract negotiations.
  • Applies accounting concepts and policies in the preparation and review of shipboard related financial transactions which may include but are not limited to voyage accounting, high volume complex accruals and prepaid expenses across a large number of accounts and monthly reclasses.
  • Reviews, analyzes and interprets complex reports/disclosures provided by third party actuaries and insurance plan administrators.
  • Prepares and/or reviews monthly balance sheet reconciliations and ensures timely resolution on outstanding items.
  • Reviews balance sheet and profit & loss financial statements to identify and resolve Accounting issues/errors during the month-end closing process.
  • Collaborates with shipboard and shore-side operational groups in order to analyze hotel and/or vessel monthly financial results and identify variance drivers for management.
  • Assists management in the analysis and identification of significant Year over Year or Month over Month flux drivers relating to Balance Sheet accounts.
  • Assists management in generating financial schedules, Sarbanes Oxley documentation, and other items for external and internal auditors as needed.
  • Identifies areas of potential internal control issues and functions as liaison with Internal Audit for the timely resolution of any such issues.
  • Conducts User Acceptance Testing on new build financial systems or upgrades/modifications of existing systems and determines whether accounting / reporting requirements are adequately met.
  • Compiles / reviews financial and statistical data and generates reports used by the upper management of various shore-side groups in evaluating the financial and operational performance of shipboard personnel.
  • Assists management in hiring, evaluating performance and conducting performance reviews for direct reports.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Integral part of department responsible for the proper accounting of approximately $1.6 billion dollars of shipboard hotel revenues, $1.5 billion dollars of hotel expenses or $1.5 billion dollars of vessel related expenses.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Requires a four-year Accounting and/or Finance degree from an accredited university.
  • Requires five or more years experience in Accounting and/or Finance. CPA preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of, and be able to apply, U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Requires strong analytical skills.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be capable of supervising / managing other professionals.
  • The ability to successfully interact with the principals, operating and administrative staffs, attorneys, actuaries, insurance plan administrators and accountants, as well as RCL senior management
  • Must be literate in Windows operating system, Excel, Access, Word and Power Point. Must have knowledge of financial and inventory control systems. JD Edwards and CrunchTime experience preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, technical journals, legal and other general business documents.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusion
