Footwear Color + Concept Designer

The Footwear Color + Concept Designer is responsible researching, identifying and presenting the color palette for each season to the Reebok footwear categories. Reporting to the Director of Trend + Color, this individual works with the creative direction team, including Apparel Color Designers, to ensure a clear color direction is communicated and adopted across all product categories and follows the seasonal design direction set by the Creative Director and Senior Management team.

Key Accountabilities:

Color Trend + Concept Design

  • Create seasonal color palettes, standards and concepts leveraging and translating trends in fashion and culture, competition, Reebok’s Design DNA and other inspiration catalysts
  • Formulate color stories, palettes, and combinations and ensure their translation, placement, and overall cross-category themes are retail viable
  • Use relevant and appropriate resources and research methods to accurately determine, anticipate and validate current and future trends in color, design, fashion, activewear, materials and fitness gear
  • Ensure that seasonal color direction is relevant to the market and brand
  • Make accurate assessments and projections of competitor strengths and weaknesses in the global market relative to the - Reebok brand, products and product lines, including market presence, tactics, merchandising and trends
  • Travel to markets, shows, and domestic/international venues to research design, color, market and lifestyle trends on a monthly basis

Color Direction + Communication

  • Communicate color, design, market and lifestyle trends using digital presentations, installations, created collateral and color reports to Design, cross-functional Product Teams and the Reebok community
  • Develop and create collateral, including imagery, palettes, written copy and video, for workshops, milestone presentations and one-on-one meetings
  • Effectively and efficiently navigate and use Reebok software tools, systems, forms and templates, including briefs and tech packs, to capture and communicate design and product information throughout the design cycle
  • Communicate color digitally with palettes, imagery and informative infographic representations; select appropriate methods of communication to accurately convey technical information in informal and formal situations
  • Freely speculate and employ multi-dimensional thinking to ideate and discover new perspectives, viewpoints or approaches during brainstorming or sketch settings
  • Ensure product successfully meets brand aesthetic and adheres to Reebok design DNA
  • Direct blocking and color application strategy in concert with category surface designers, interfacing with footwear designers and product marketers
  • Select and ensure that color, graphics/prints, materials, fit and trims enhance product aesthetic, work within overall design range; ensure that overall design has market appeal
  • Apply knowledge of color dyeing and lab-dip process
  • Assess potential cost / margin impact involving color application with varying footwear components
  • Research and deliver content pertaining to new technologies for performance products, or fashion influences to sports-based lifestyle products or graphics

Knowledge, Skills + Abilities:

  • Knowledge of color trends and how they evolve
  • Knowledge of color mixing, color compatibility and color placement
  • Knowledge of footwear design, materials and construction/processes
  • Present effectively and communicate confidently to all levels of the organization, including Senior Management
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively to perform a variety of tasks with different levels of complexity by developing effective planning and organizing
  • Participate conscientiously and with accountability with own and cross-functional teams, and facilitate effective team outcomes
  • Negotiate skillfully, balancing authority, directness and forcefulness with diplomacy in situations with both internal and external groups
  • Communicate updates and project status to the team and others in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Receive and give feedback in a positive, constructive manner


  • 8+ years of design experience in footwear and/or color
  • Advanced level Adobe Illustrator; Photoshop and InDesign a plus
  • Have managed or mentored more junior designers in this area
  • Bachelor’s degree in fashion, product or industrial design or fine arts
