Senior Clinical Sequencing Specialist

Recombine seeks a Senior Clinical Sequencing Specialist whose primary responsibility will be optimizing and overviewing the clinical Next Generation Sequencing team of the laboratory under the supervision of the Molecular Genetics Department Supervisor. An ideal candidate will have a strong background in the field of genetics with extensive experience in NGS technology, optimization and troubleshooting. Also, experience working in a clinical environment and familiarity with the strict clinical standards required for assay development and compliance. Other duties include: overseeing other laboratory DNA assays that the team is responsible for (i.e. Sanger sequencing and digital PCR), coordinating technicians and assay workflows, communicating the needs of the laboratory to other off site personnel, inventory management, and implementing protocol changes necessary in the laboratory.
The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and expertise in usage of NGS for targeted and exome sequencing using NimbleGen and other library preparation methods on Illumina NextSeq and HiSeq. The candidate will implement and oversee clinical procedures and protocols, assay development, quality control, and will carry out troubleshooting. Other tasks include coordination, communication and collaboration with other members of the team (including lab and Bioinformatics scientists) regarding sample workflow and results; plus, all related job duties as assigned. Excellent communication skills are essential. Knowledge and expertise on digital PCR and Sanger sequencing assays is desirable. Also, experience with automation instruments for NGS library preparation and other purposes as needed will be a plus.
BS or MS degree in Biology or other related science. Experience working in a clinical environment. Experience with working independently, organizing different workflows and procedures as needed, NGS assay development and troubleshooting. Extensive expertise and knowledge of NGS assays, qPCR, workflows, and utilization of Illumina NextSeq and HiSeq instruments is essential for this position. Knowledge in digital PCR and Sanger sequencing. Flexible work hours as needed to meet deadlines. Results-oriented and self-motivated. Proficient with common software, including Excel and MS Office.
Pluses – Desirable: Previous team leader and coordinator experience, fluorescent microplate (Envision) technology, and has worked with automation instruments (liquid handlers).
- Clinical NGS experience (3-5+ years) performing NimbleGen/Illumina and other library prep methods required
- Experience working in high-throughput environment (100+ samples a week) with strict deadlines
- Experience with Illumina NGS instruments (Nextseq, Hiseq, Miseq) required
- Experience with digital PCR (dPCR) and Sanger sequencing
- Ability to: optimize and troubleshoot existing protocols, implement new sequencing protocols, work with vendors to integrate new technologies, and design new library prep experiments
