Job Description:

Rakuten Rewards is looking for a Senior Android Engineer (for our Toronto office) or an Android Engineer (for our San Mateo office) to join our rapidly growing engineering team and help us continue to design and build the best mobile shopping experience for Android phones and tablets. We're an international team spanning across 3 continents responsible for building software used by hundreds of millions of users.

Working within a Squad structure, you will collaborate with product, design and engineering teammates to build, and maintain our next generation of Android applications while identifying and fixing application bottlenecks, maintaining the core code, and updating applications published on the Google Play Store.

You will be working on our core product, user experience and collaborating with other Rakuten Teams across the Americas.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement our flagship Android app which is used by hundreds of thousands of users every day
  • Ensuring applications meet and surpass all quality and performance specifications
  • Identifying potential problems and resolving application bottlenecks
  • Publishing applications in Google Play
  • Maintaining technical debt and refactoring of the application
  • Designing and implementing application updates
  • Work closely with Product Managers and UX Designers to flesh out details and execute on requirements, with a keen eye towards quality and automated testing
  • Work with backend teams to develop robust end to end features
  • Make others better through mentoring and promoting a collaborative team culture


Qualifications:
  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related environment
  • Experience with Java, Kotlin and knowledge of Android design patterns
  • 4+ years building native applications for Android devices
  • 2+ years working on enterprise Android apps (or 1 million+ downloads)
  • Experience working with experimentation tools (e.g. Optimizely)
  • Experience working with micro frontend
  • Portfolio of published applications on GitHub and/or Play Store
  • Experience with integrating back-end services
  • Proficient with GIT
  • Familiarity with push notifications, APIs and cloud messaging
  • Experience with continuous integration
  • Experience working with other Android developers as part of a team
  • Experience with entire product lifecycle duties in an Agile environment
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills
