We are seeking an Application Architect to join our Life Systems team. The person selected for this role with be responsible for primary system design, communication of system design, and ensuring the software system conforms to the design.  Additional responsibilities include coding, testing, and implementing software systems.  The Application Architect works closely with business analysts and stakeholders/customers to gather requirements and ensure needs and expectations are met in a timely and cost-effective manner.  The selected candidate will also work closely with Software Engineers, providing mentorship and direction to ensure adherence to design goals and successful project completion.  Additionally, the Application  Architect diagnoses, isolates and de-bugs software problems and provides resolution; prepares and modifies technical documentation; researches, evaluates and recommends new development tools and applications as appropriate; and defines and develops standards, best practices, and implementation patterns.


  • Conduct research and evaluate information in order to successfully design and develop large and complex systems
  • Design, construct, modify and test very large and complex system changes
  • Ensure systems effectively interact with existing systems/processes
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with Protective’s Underwriting and Issue processes
  • Understand business needs and provide quality customer support  
  • Meet customer requirements, anticipate needs and/or problems and understand the broad impact of changes on customer processes
  • Provide appropriate solutions and proactively suggests process improvements
  • Provide thorough and complete documentation for all designs following corporate standards
  • Display leadership tendencies and be considered 'a top expert' by peers
  • Provide an appropriate level of feedback to fellow team members, stakeholders and management
  • Willingly assist with training and skill developments needs of other team members


  • Bachelor’s degree in a technology related field or 4 years of applicable work experience, 10+ years of applicable work experience is typical
  • Assembler, COBOL and CICS language expertise
  • JCL and VSAM experience required
  • IBM mainframe environment (LIFE-COMM, LIFE/70) experience required
  • Advanced programming skills with ability to design software solutions that meet complex requirements
  • Thorough understanding of various data structures, implementation patterns and practices
  • Ability to multitask, manage multiple priorities and work well under the pressure of deadlines
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems
  • Must be self- motivated, able to work and learn independently, coachable and committed to continuous learning
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience in Underwriting and Issue processes preferred
  • Experience with PDF and billing is preferred
