Associate General Counsel, Financial Products

America’s financial services system is regressive: the less money you have, the more expensive it is to have it. That shows up for low-income Americans in the form of overdraft fees, maintenance fees, and retail banking options that don’t promote financial health. At Propel, we serve over 2 million households every month through Fresh EBT, a free app that helps families manage government benefits like food stamps. Read more about the impact of Fresh EBT here, here, and here. Now we’re building Fresh Card, a new depository financial product focused on being the best banking option for low-income Americans.

We’re looking for an experienced, scrappy, and mission-driven Legal Counsel to be the founding member of Propel’s in-house legal team. The right person for this role is passionate about being a core part of our product development process, working directly with our product and business teams as we iteratively develop products that promote the financial health of low-income Americans.

Propel is a rapidly growing for-profit technology company that holds its social mission at its core. Our investors include Andreessen Horowitz, the Omidyar Network, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, and Nas.

We offer:

  • Immediate opportunity to make a tangible, measurable impact on the financial lives of millions of low-income Americans
  • A fast-paced work environment where we constantly push for greater impact
  • A work culture focused on continuous professional growth
  • Company events and weekly catered meals
  • Competitive compensation (including equity) and excellent benefits
  • A dog-friendly office based in Downtown Brooklyn

What you’ll do:

  • Provide timely, concise, and business-focused legal advice
  • Structure and negotiate contractual agreements with vendors and service providers
  • Work with our issuing bank to ensure that we are in line with their policies
  • Contribute ideas to offer more user and business value with our financial products
  • Keep the engineering team operating at high efficiency by removing legal/regulatory roadblocks before they affect the team
  • Stay up to date on the latest developments in fintech and financial services regulation

What you have:

  • J.D. degree and a state bar member in good standing
  • 5+ years of law firm, government, or in-house experience in banking or payments
  • Deep knowledge of fintech legal and regulatory issues, including UDAAP, Reg E, BSA/AML, data privacy
  • Proven ability to operate in a startup environment
  • Experience negotiating key contracts to power a consumer fintech product
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies is ideal
  • Interest in taking on work in other areas, such as business development, strategy, or operations, as the company grows
  • Excitement about building a product that is not just legal and compliant, but also highly impactful for low-income Americans

We are strongly committed to hiring a diverse and multicultural team. We encourage applications from traditionally under-represented backgrounds, especially those with direct experience with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
