People Operations Generalist (Systems and Tools)

Since launching in 2014, we’ve had over 2 billion chapters read and 4 million writer sign-ups on our platform.

Pocket Gems People Operations team focuses on creating an inspiring place to work while maintaining an atmosphere of creativity, fun and productivity. As the People Ops Generalist, you will be the face of HR on the People Operations team, responsible for ensuring a seamless, people-centric onboarding process, and collecting and maintaining critical HR data. After you implement our new HRIS, you’ll be responsible for integrating and maintaining all HR software tools as well as updating our processes to streamline the experience for employees and the ease of use for the People Operations team. The ideal candidate enjoys diving into details and looking for ways simplify and automate People Ops processes. We put a lot of emphasis on a high-touch, responsive experience for our employees and therefore we are looking for someone who enjoys working directly with employees as well as with our systems!


  • Communicate with individuals across company to field and triage People Ops questions
  • Onboard new employees with respect to our systems and onboarding documentation, in a welcoming, high-touch manner
  • Manage all employee records, documentation and process all employee transactions
  • Design, develop, test, and direct on-going administration of the HRIS tool including maintenance, selection and integration of other software tools, employee and manager self-service functionality
  • Systemize and improve through efficiencies or automation People Ops workflows
  • Responsible for the integrity of all HRIS data and regular and ad-hoc reporting of key indicators and overall functional expertise for the system
  • Establish and direct internal audit processes to ensure data integrity
  • Take established People programs (i.e. performance review process) and operationalize the activity so that it is streamlined, efficient and repeatable
  • Manage the day to day activities related to benefits, 401k, leaves, and employee lifecycle transitions
  • Implement and administer benefits portals with HRIS tool
  • Act as a partner with other members of the People team and with payroll


  • 2-3+ years of People Operations experience
  • 2-3 years in a people facing role that requires strong communication skills
  • Proven success executing the HRIS system within a small/mid-size company (<500 employees) that has been through growth and scale
  • Experience implementing a HRIS tool and integrating it with other systems (for example payroll and an ATS)
  • Buildout workflow process for People Operations to be streamlined, efficient and automated (for our needs)
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy with your own work and reviewing the work of others
  • Current working knowledge of California and federal labor laws
  • Thrive in a collaborative team environment, taking initiative, executing on projects independently and being resourceful
  • Demonstrated discretion and sound judgment handling sensitive and confidential data
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Familiarity and comfort with compensation administration, equity and immigration are pluses
  • Enjoy juggling competing priorities and get it all done and on-time
