Tooling Engineer

Primary Responsibilities May Include:

  • Expertise in all types of milling cutting tools, including indexable tools, solid carbide tools etc.
  • Well rounded understanding of materials, surface finishes, and surface treatments.
  • Identify and recommend tools best matched to the application and machining parameters.
  • Trouble shoot performance and tool life problems and make recommendations regarding corrective actions.
  • Analyze customer' s performance based on tool use and suggest new tool designs to determine possible improvements.
  • Manage all Cost Savings.
  • Report Cost Savings activity via web based cost savings database.

Manufacturer Management:
  • Vendor tasking quarterly and status updates.
  • Vendor Visits and Supplier Log.
  • Top Efficient/Inefficient Tools by Department.
  • Tool Life Improvements.
  • Quality Improvements.
  • Support Productivity Improvements.
  • Support all Tooling, Process and Manufacturing Engineers.
  • Attend Plant production /Tooling meetings.

Manufacturer Interaction:
  • Work with the representatives of our manufacturing supply base to identify operations/applications for future efficiency projects.
  • Work with manufacturers on Tooling improvements and problem resolution.
  • Facilitate root-cause analysis and corrective action plans for tooling related concerns with the support of the manufacturer.
  • Interface with OEM machine builders during new program launches.
  • Establish a regular cadence of meetings with key manufacturer representatives to review performance metrics.

Customer Interaction:
  • Monthly reporting of value stream production costs and top inefficient tools to plant management.
  • Review key performance indicators and open test status with the customer' s engineering team.
  • Provide technical support to all customer engineering and production personnel.
  • Provide pricing quotations for new tooling as required.

  • Candidate must possess an Engineering degree (Manufacturing, Industrial or Mechanical) and a minimum of 5 years hands on experience in a Manufacturing environment with an emphasis on tool life management, machine up-time, work-holding, manufacturer communications and lean applications.
  • Familiarity with all types of cutting tools (drills, mills, reamers, etc.) and abrasive tools (grinding, honing, polishing, etc.).
  • Well rounded understanding of materials, surface finishes, and surface treatments.
  • Ability to read and understand tooling and work piece blueprints.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications with a strong emphasis on Excel.
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Certification of Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing is desired.
