Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director, Public & Patient Engagement, the Associate Director is responsible for strategic decision-making and high-level management of stakeholder engagement program activities that advance PCORI's Engagement mission. The primary responsibilities include developing and managing relationships with stakeholder communities; providing intellectual and organizational leadership in the engagement of stakeholder communities through a variety of proven and innovative approaches or activities; evaluating program activities and PCORI's award portfolio to provide strategic advice on engagement opportunities; translating information to different stakeholder audiences; and, developing innovative approaches to receive and use public input.

For the purposes of this job description, engagement is defined as broad involvement of patients, family and caregivers, clinicians, payers/insurers, purchasers/employers, and other members of the public as individual communities or as members of interdisciplinary teams participating in the planning, conduct, dissemination, and implementation of comparative clinical effectiveness research.

Duties and Responsibilities

Public and Patient Engagement Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary PCORI liaison to stakeholder constituencies, responsible for regular communication with, and collecting input from, stakeholders and stakeholder organizations.
  • Establish explicit, transparent processes to solicit and obtain stakeholder feedback on PCORI priorities, research, results, and dissemination and implementation plans.
  • Obtain, synthesize, and facilitate representation of the views of stakeholder communities to the PCORI Board of Governors, Methodology Committee, advisory panels, and staff.
  • Provide strategy and leadership in the development, maintenance, and support of stakeholder networks using appropriate vehicles and modalities to capture and incorporate the perspectives of stakeholders into PCORI's priorities, research agenda, dissemination, and implementation efforts.
  • Translate and communicate the state of PCORI's work as it evolves to different audiences with unique expertise and priorities.
  • Oversee the collaboration of appropriate PCORI teams to create opportunities for interactions of patients and patient organizations with other stakeholders.
  • Provide strategy and leadership in the development of discussion forums and other events that afford interaction of stakeholders with PCORI Board of Governors, Methodology Committee members, PCORI staff and other stakeholders.
  • Manage staff and actively participate in the collaboration of PCORI staff, contractors, and other colleagues in studying, evaluating, and improving the processes used by PCORI in engaging stakeholder communities.

Organizational Responsibilities and Contributions

  • Represent, and support colleagues in the representation of, PCORI publicly regarding the Public and Patient Engagement program, PCORI's programmatic or research support funding opportunities, and PCORI generally.
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and other professional development activities to maintain and enhance patient-centered outcomes research and stakeholder engagement expertise.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from teams across PCORI including Science, the Office of the Executive Director, Public Policy, Dissemination and Implementation, Communications, and others as necessary and appropriate.
  • Lead, contribute to, and participate in internal groups and teams and crosscutting initiatives.
  • Keep Program Director and Engagement team apprised of developments and occurrences in the field that are likely to affect Engagement program decision-making and/or strategies.
  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned by PCORI management.

Required Skills

  • Broad knowledge and appreciation of comparative clinical effectiveness research, patient-centeredness and patient/stakeholder engagement practices
  • Broad knowledge in health policy, organization and structure of healthcare systems organization, and payment policies

  • Experience in a multi-stakeholder professional environment
  • Experience working collaboratively across departments and position levels, serving as a conduit and translator of information.
  • Experience establishing innovative processes and approaches to gather input
  • Experience translating information to different audiences with unique expertise and priorities.
  • Working knowledge of PCORI's work both in science and engagement
  • Ability to develop tools and guidance to support engagement

Required Experience

  • Advanced degree in a healthcare or social science, public policy discipline (e.g. education/health education, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, psychology, political science, sociology, or related disciplines)
  • Employment by or extensive volunteer service in a PCORI stakeholder community (e.g. professional society, trade association, or patient organization)
  • Familiarity with comparative clinical effectiveness research
  • 7+ years' progressive experience and demonstrated success in stakeholder representation, coalition building, grassroots organizing, or policy in health related sectors
  • Training or extensive experience in communication with multiple and diverse communities.
  • Experience and interest in use of digital media to solicit the views of or convene stakeholders
  • Experience working with governing boards, committees and advisory panels
  • Familiarity with evaluation and research methods, budgeting, Excel and Salesforce highly desirable
  • Experience in leading and managing a variety of formats of stakeholder meetings, including workshops and roundtables
