Why We Need You

You've spent the majority of your career so far building web applications. You know what good and bad architecture looks like, and you want to be able to spread good architecture wherever you go. You understand the complexities of designing systems that are robust, and the trade-offs required to build something that many can use.

At PagerDuty, we are building an incident management system to help IT operations groups detect and proactively respond to issues. Startups, Fortune 500 companies, and everything in-between rely on us to alert them quickly when they have operational troubles. We are not afraid to use the the latest and greatest tools and languages for our live production applications. We're looking for a senior software engineer to join our Web Engineering group to help us continue scaling our web product, designing great systems, adding 9s to uptime, and mentoring other developers. If you're a seasoned Ruby on Rails/JavaScript engineer with an interest in functional languages like Scala and Elixir and systems like Kafka you'll love what we're doing!

How You Contribute To Our Vision

We've got a solid web code base with high code coverage, but we have so many more features and architectural pieces to add as we continue our growth as a company. You will get a chance to work in all of our web & API code bases as well as any open-source repositories that back them.

  • Build and ship new customer-facing features (complete your first production deploy within the first 3 days!)
  • Provide designs for web framework-level changes, and subsequently help implement those ideas
  • Deliver solutions - with or without a project manager to guide you
  • Cultivate best practices and high-quality standards for the web projects in collaboration with other engineering groups
  • Mentor and onboard junior engineers
  • Empathetic - you can clearly communicate your thoughts and opinions to others and faciliate these technical discussions to a successful outcome

About You

  • 5+ years of development experience working on customer-facing and web-based systems
  • Mastery of at least one modern web programming framework: Ruby on Rails, Django, CakePHP, or similar
  • In-depth knowledge of JavaScript - experience with large-scale JavaScript projects or JS frameworks is preferred (such as Backbone, AngularJS, Ember.js, React, or Meteor)
  • 3+ years of working with REST-based APIs
  • 5+ years of working on service-oriented systems
  • At least 1 project in which you were the technical lead and brought it to completion into production

  • Previous experience with web monitoring tools
