Process and Product Development Engineer – Grottoes, VA

This job has responsibilities in the areas of process engineering and product development as described below:

Product Development Requirements and Responsibilities

  • Possess the ability to supply technical support for non-technical personnel (sales, marketing, internal/external customers);
  • An understanding the use and applications for the plant’s product line as it applies to foodservice, consumer, and industrial packaging film applications;
  • An understanding of film specifications and formulations in order to make product recommendations for specific customer applications;
  • An understanding of PVC film chemistry and the interaction and use of resin types, plasticizers, stabilizers, processing aids, modifiers, lubrication systems, slip additives, anti-block additives, and color additives;
  • An understanding of the use of various testing methods such as capillary rheology, heat stability, fusion time, lab scale extrusion, tensile properties, coefficient of friction, impact and tear resistance, shrinkage, barrier properties, surface energy, and heat sealing properties;
  • Creation and maintenance of product documentation including formulation recipes, product specifications, testing methods, and experimental evaluations;
  • Collaboration with the process specialists in producing film trials for sample analysis and customer testing;
  • Collaboration with the lab technicians to perform formulation testing, rheology, lab extrusion, and environmental testing;
  • Administration of the laboratory area;
  • Collaboration with field services technicians to evaluate performance of test films in various applications. 

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials or Polymer Engineering preferred. Other degree disciplines will be considered if the candidate possesses past polymer and chemical processing experience
  • Minimum of relevant intern experience or 2+ years of experience without internships.
  • The conception, design, implementation, and documentation of plant process systems such as blending, extrusion, converting of PVC and Nylon blown film products;
  • The ability to analyze process problems and ability to apply appropriate technology to the solution;
  • An understanding of both blown film and cast film extrusion;
  • Management of the procurement, implementation and documentation of equipment used in blown film extrusion and converting;
  • An understanding the operation of blown film extrusion and converting equipment;
  • Possess the ability to work with manufacturing operations on various production problems. 
In addition, it is desired the applicant have skills in one or more of the following areas:
  • Safety Processes;
  • Process Controls;
  • Environmental Abatement Technologies/Regulations;
  • Advanced Data Management; or
  • Lean Manufacturing

The requirements of the position are approximated by the following:

  • Product Development: 40%
  • Process and Customer Support: 30%
  • Assistance to Other Disciplines: 20%
  • Capital Projects: 10%
