Sr Engineer R & D

Location: Granville, Ohio – United States

The position plays a key role in creating a capability around open innovation to accelerate growth for Owens Corning. Working with the Director of Front End of Innovation and other members of the Front End of Innovation team, the primary accountability of the role is to scout the universe of technology developers to identify the most promising solutions that sit outside the current borders of the enterprise that meet the mid – long term business strategies for each of the three divisions. The incumbent will compliment internal marketing and technology teams in understanding key market and technology trends and then work with a range of external providers to identify and source appropriate technologies.

The successful incumbent will be a high potential team member who is expected to rapidly develop and take on greater roles and responsibilities that demonstrates Owens Corning’s (OC) values and a commitment to high performance.

Responsibilities

  • Create and build out an ecosystem for open innovation activities
  • Build out a working network of internal partners and champions to enable the effective scouting of key technology areas relevant to the Owens Corning businesses.
  • Annually develop a list of recommended external engagement events to attend to support Front End of Innovation’s tech scouting, networking, and brand building activities.
  • Develop an external network of subject matter experts, start ups, national labs, corporate contacts, etc. to enable effective lead generation and technology scouting.
  • Establish appropriate systems to effectively store, publish, and share key contacts, findings, and leads to support other Front End of Innovation activities and ensure organizational memory.

Metrics:

  • Number of high quality external events selected for OC attendance.
  • Number of high quality opportunity leads proactively sent to the incumbent by his/her outside network.
  • Feedback from internal champions.
  • Accessibility of the knowledge base generated through the work streams.
  • Robustness of the systems & processes to enable organizational flexibility.
  • Lead the identification and evaluation of new technology solutions for possible transition to preplatform status
  • Working closely with a range of internal stakeholders, identify potential emerging technologies and product needs that could offer potential to accelerate growth and have a significant impact to Owens Corning.
  • Map out and analyze the intersection of mega trends, technology trends, market trends and business strategy into a workable framework to identify areas of focus for future preplatform technology scouting work.
  • Fully evaluate the landscape (IP, players, etc.) and opportunities relevant to the areas under evaluation.
  • Evaluate technology options and make a recommendations on appropriate options for Owens Corning to pursue to develop MVP’s.
  • Present and socialize findings/learnings within the Front End of Innovation team to drive further analysis and continued learning as an individual and a team
  • Effectively communicate the analysis to the key stakeholders and address any questions to drive alignment around the recommended action and decision.

Metrics:

  • Effectiveness of project scoping, execution, and delivery.
  • Potential scale ($MM) of all opportunities identified as “above the line” options worthy of potential transition to preplatform status.
  • Supporting the rapid prototyping and evaluation of technologies to create platforms
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to complete more detailed assessments of technology preplatforms to identify preferred partners / providers to accelerate the prototyping of the technology.
  • Support the development of initial product concepts for the most promising technology preplatform options, leveraging internal and external capabilities to outline potential product concepts.
  • Leverage expert insights to test and confirm product concept(s).
  • Present and socialize findings/learnings within the Front End of Innovation team to drive further analysis and continued learning as an individual and a team.
  • Effectively communicate the analysis to the key stakeholers and address any questions to drive alignment around the recommended decision and action (invest in development, sunset, or acquire).

Metrics:

  • Effectiveness of project scoping, execution, and delivery.
  • Potential scale ($MM) of all opportunities identified as “above the line” options worthy of potential transition to platform status and/or resource savings from efficiently justifying project kill decisions.
  • Technology consultancy supporting Corporate Groups in “new” technology areas
  • Define, scope, and execute projects to rapidly research and analyze potential acquisition opportunities obtained from the Corporate Development Team.
  • Projects will develop an overview of the potential technology/acquisition target, its benefits/limitations, and the relevant landscape.
  • Provide a recommendation as to whether Owens Corning should proceed with a more significant assessment of the option or “pass”.
  • Present and socialize findings/learnings within the Front End of Innovation team to drive further analysis and continued learning as an individual and a team.
  • Effectively communicate the analysis to the key stakeholders and address any questions to drive alignment around the recommended action and decision.

Metrics:

  • Effectiveness of project scoping, execution, and delivery.
  • Feedback from the “customer” as to the quality and impact of the work.
  • Continued monitoring of potentially fundamental technology threats / opportunities
  • Principle member coordinating a cross business team monitoring a domain of technologies that could drive step changes in products’ performances and manufacturing productivity.
  • Developing and leading the execution of a team wide effort to monitor key players, trends, industry announcements, etc.
  • As the team principle, leads off on the landscape, threat/opportunity, and competitor analyses, while incorporating and summarizing the opinions and recommendations of the broader team.
  • Presents and socializes findings/learnings within the Front End of Innovation team to drive further analysis and continued learning as an individual and a team.
  • Effectively communicate the analysis to the key stakeholders and address any questions to drive alignment around the recommended actions and decisions.

  • Periodic updates to the landscape or analyses delivered to the relevant business(es).
  • Feedback from the “customer” as to the quality and impact of the work.

Job Requirements

Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Successfully completed an advanced scientific college degree in engineering (chemical, mechanical, material science), physics, or chemistry (Master’s degree, PhD).
  • At least 8 years’ experience with a combination of technical, program/project management, commercialization and/or innovation roles.
  • Solid analytical skills and capable of structuring problems and scoping/executing projects in highly-ambiguous situations
  • Ability to work independently and manage time across multiple projects with varying deadlines and commitment needs
  • Experience working in a matrix organizations
  • Experience with cross-functional teams. Aptitude for building strategic and execution-focused plans and alliances with team members that are non-subordinate colleagues and are primarily engaged in activities for other business units.
  • Effective planning and execution of communications for internal and external stakeholders, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and technical programs that deliver quantifiable financial returns
  • Comfortable to lead deep technical discussions and market/customer discussions.
  • An energetic team player, able to work with cross-functional and international teams in a fast-paced environment.
