Maintenance Leader

Location: Portland, Oregon – United States


The Maintenance Leader has responsibility to ensure efficient productivity, quality of workmanship, engagement and safety of the maintenance operations personnel. The Maintenance Leader also sets departmental goals and provides direction, guidance, development for the maintenance employees. Accountable for leading the Maintenance department.

Reports to: Site Leader


Live the Safety stand, adhere to the safety responsibilities.

  • Ensuring a safe, clean and environmentally compliant work environment and building a culture where safety is a first priority
  • Training and developing employees to safely perform their jobs
  • Leading and supporting safety initiatives and processes to drive towards zero injuries
  • Implement a personal safety action plan and review with leader
  • Safety metrics – RIR, first aids, near misses, BBS observations, SAFE and Critical 6

Maintain Rigor around RWP/Predictive Maintenance Program(s)

  • Maintain an appropriate work order closure rate as set and reviewed at least annually with immediate Leader.
  • Track and communicate work order notifications with all relevant staff members
  • Ensure staff is trained, maintains current on any required certifications and that all parties understand and are capable of performing the full scope of their job expectations.
  • Holds department accountable for delivering to targeted goals, and stretches each to their full potential regularly.

Balance Office and Floor Presence to Accomplish Varied Tasks

  • Maintains budget (labor, contractor, repair & replacement) and inventory of spare parts in a fiscally responsible fashion
  • Provides trend analysis data to staff with regard to relevant work processes and products
  • Understands day-to-day production challenges, repeating/nagging issues ensuring proper prioritization of work-partners collaboratively with Operations Management.

Technical & Leadership Competence

  • Demonstrates an understanding of manufacturing processes, equipment, and facilities
  • Manages all capital projects/installations professionally and delivers committed results timely and cost effectively
  • Provides evidenced mentoring to skilled craftsmen and staff personnel and demonstrates work behaviors consistent with expectations.
  • Ensures performance management and timekeeping processes are managed appropriately.

Knowing our Customers

  • Understanding and communicating customer expectations throughout the Maintenance Department where appropriate.
  • Ensuring the reliability of plant machinery and equipment in order to meet production schedules and customer orders.

Executing Strategy and Directing Operations

  • Determining organizational objectives and priorities in support of the Plant’s strategy and vision, and for developing teams to deliver results in support of these objectives and priorities
  • Improving plant efficiency measures through execution of the Reliability Work Process
  • Living the values and vision of the Company; establish an engaged workforce characterized by mutual trust, open communications, teamwork, and recognition
  • Assigning and coordinating the work in the maintenance department
  • Preparing budgets relative to capital expenditures, staffing, repairs, etc.
  • Facilitating process improvements through people deployment, productivity enhancements, high performance work teams and being a model for change
  • Developing and leading strategic business plans; accountable for delivering plant performance metrics
  • Driving alignment between plant departments

Leading and Developing Talent

  • Creating and sustaining a culture where talent is developed through effective performance management and talent evaluation
  • Effectively staffing the organization, providing competent people and the appropriate mix of internal and external talent to satisfy both near-term and long-term succession needs
  • Investing in the growth and development of individuals identified as high potential talent
  • Establishing clear and measurable expectations of performance and review commitments to ensure goals are achieved; completing performance appraisals and coaching employees to develop and execute growth and development plans
  • Monitoring and enforcing plant policies in a consistent manner
  • Maintaining documentation, tracking, counseling and executing coaching and corrective action when performance issues occur
  • Actively leading and building effective work teams and committees to increase plant performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives



  • Bachelors degree from an accredited university preferred
  • Industrial Mechanical and Electrical background, with a minimum of 3 years leadership responsibilities
  • Certification – Certified Maintenance Reliability Professional highly preferred
  • Experience, knowledge or formal training in Six Sigma
  • Previous experience/proficiency with navigating maintenance management systems {i.e. SAP}
  • Writing Capital Appropriation (CA’s)
  • Demonstrated Project Management skills
  • Provide technically adept guidance that displays an understanding of industrial mechanics, electrical, electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics, PLC’s, AC/DC theory, motors, etc. to maintenance team.
  • Ability to proficiently utilize Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
