Technology Leadership – Advanced Engineer Innovation Product Leadership NA – Materials Characterization & Product Intelligence, Granville, OH

The Technology Implementation & Materials Characterization Advanced Engineer manages the development and implementation of new technologies related to material characterization to support the CSB organization. The person in this role will build and support a culture of outside-in approach to material characterization. This person will develop customized measurement techniques as needed to enable rapid test and learn in new markets and applications, procure and implement new technology to broaden innovation capabilities as required. This person will be a Material Characterization Expert who provides perspective on mechanical properties of composite laminates/structures and their behavior as intended for various targeted applications.

This position will be located in Granville, Ohio and requires travel (up to 30%).

Responsibilities, Scope and Contributions

  • Live the Safety Stand of Owens Corning and adhere to safety responsibilities

The Successful Candidate:

  • Ensures rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and OC corporate policies


  • Attend monthly safety meetings, audits and safety days
  • Manage SOP, JHA, LLT, MOC for new method development and implementation
  • Development and implementation of material characterization technologies

The Successful Candidate:

  • Conducts hands-on laboratory testing and implements new methodology as needed for product differentiation
  • Understands latest material characterization tools and augments current characterization capabilities for composites and classic materials like metal, concrete, paper etc.
  • Utilizes materials science knowledge and failure mode analysis to provide insights to product developers.


  • # Technical evaluations of material testing and characterization methods (destructive and non-destructive) for composites and traditional materials
  • # New characterization capabilities added to enable business critical programs
  • Experimental Design & Statistical Analysis

The Successful Candidate:

  • Develop rigorous design of experiments based on statistical basis to generate better understanding of mechanical performance of products.
  • Partners with global Innovation, Business and Marketing teams to provide robust testing plans that measure the relevant characteristics with appropriate sample sizes and ensure use of statistical data analysis to drive decision


  • Technical reports issued for all evaluation efforts and new method implementations
  • # Evaluation efforts resulting in key business decisions, new ideas and/or new characterization capabilities
  • Customer Collaboration

The Successful Candidate:

  • Actively participates in global multi-disciplinary product development, process improvement, and problem solving teams, including Product Leadership, Safety, and Sales & Marketing
  • Provides technical insights to customers to understand product performance.
  • Translates new methodologies and processes across global labs and plants as needed to ensure global standardization of methods.


  • Connecting with customers to understand and frame problems
  • Periodic dashboard to measure progress on the ongoing studies

Job requirements

Minimum Qualification

  • Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field of study
  • 5+ year experience in a research and development environment
  • Knowledge and experience with global material characterization processes and continuous process improvement
  • Travel: 10-20%

Preferred Qualification

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field of study
  • Six Sigma Black Belt
  • Experience in third party accreditations such as ISO 17025


  • Strong background in material behavior, stress-strain relationships, FRP composite testing and FRP composite materials failure analysis
  • Strong experience in the test methods utilized globally in various FRP composite applications
  • Strong experience in Composites applications and processes
  • Five or more years of experience in material characterization and product evaluations

Knowledge and Skills

  • Must be well versed in failure mode analysis and degradation mechanisms of materials, especially anisotropic materials and fiber reinforced polymers
  • Understanding of composite processes, e.g. vacuum infusion, filament winding, Pultrusion, RTM, SMC, LFT Injection, etc. will be a plus.
  • Understand customers fitness for use related to specifications, procedures, and products and partner with the international team of product development experts to build solutions
  • Fully functional in the use of the Microsoft Operating system and proficient with standard computer applications
  • Must be proficient in experimental design, statistical analysis and quality systems; have an understanding of modeling tools.
