Principal Medical Writer


Responsible for the delivery of high-quality editorial content on a

major account through effective resourcing and management and coaching

of editorial team members. Provides scientific direction for the account

team and client. Can write accurate scientific, medical and educational

content that meets the client's brief and deadline. Works with client

services to drive business development.

Medical Writing and Editorial Leadership:

  • Is the editorial lead for at least one major account, working across therapy areas
  • Responsible for the quality and accuracy of all editorial content delivered on the accounts
  • Applies thinking across therapy areas and accounts, applying extensive breadth and depth of medical communications experience and wide therapy area expertise to client deliverables
  • Can provide medical advice across many therapy areas and quickly develop expertise in new therapy areas
  • Capable of creating the full spectrum of medical education materials (both promotional and non-promotional), including less common items
  • Is a central adviser to the account team on scientific and editorial matters; can act as the scientific lead on accounts across OHW Op Cos; and is seen as a Med Ed and scientific expert across the company
  • Able to actively participate in all types of client meeting (both strategic and tactical)
  • In partnership with the account lead, can design, develop, implement and manage strategic medical education programmes
  • Able to juggle several projects and accounts, managing incoming workload effectively and maintaining standards of excellence in finished products
  • Responsible for editorial scheduling and resourcing for the account, including the use of freelancers
  • Mentors and coaches writers on the account team
  • Has considerable experience of onsite delivery and is able to offer problem solving based on experience
  • Can input to budgets and schedules, providing accurate estimates of editorial time required on projects
  • Has line management responsibility: actively involved in constructing personal development plans for editorial team members
  • Can develop and deliver editorial and scientific training to the internal team

Client Service and Professional Relations:

  • Forms close working relationships with clients, external experts and internal agency teams; is recognised as a Med Ed expert and trusted advisor by these parties
  • Is the main point of contact on matters of scientific content for the client and medical experts
  • Is seen by clients as a scientific consultant / partner and is frequently contacted for advice and input
  • Has experience of working across different accounts and clients and is able to apply this experience to new client situations in order to quickly establish effective client relationships
  • Continuously looks for ways to improve projects and to enhance value to clients with new solutions
  • Can lead discussions relating to assigned accounts / projects, at both a tactical and strategic level, with clients, external experts and internal colleagues
  • Partners with the client services team to lead and drive each account to meet the client's and OHW's objectives
  • Uses scientific expertise and skills to proactively identify new opportunities for clients and OHW and to develop new business for existing and new clients
  • Can be the scientific lead for new business pitches and proposal development
