Editor II, III-Morning Edition

Writes, edits and updates news coverage; plans and manages large packages, projects and initiatives; assists in planning breaking and long-term coverage.

Develops timely, original program content for Morning Edition.  Takes the lead in initiating, researching and executing major show-based projects, working closely with show hosts¸ supervisory team, editorial and production staff.   The Editor I/II write and edits scripts for daily and future broadcast and provides support for the host in preparing for daily interviews.  This position also provides editorial guidance and mentoring for production staff and prepares and edits material for on-air and online. Works under the direct supervision of the Morning Edition management team.

Essential Duties Include

  • Takes a larger role in planning, editing and producing coverage.
  • Conceptualizes, writes and edits news and feature content, including host interviews.
  • Has broad interest in news and recommends specific stories and areas of coverage.
  • Works in the field with reporters and hosts, as assigned.
  • Ensures editorial accuracy in all scripts, in content and formatting and quality of writing and show-related communication with stations.
  • Works effectively on deadline to suggest and execute revisions and monitor news for possible inclusion in stories/show.
  • Collaborates actively with Social Strategist and Digital Team to ensure show content is aggressively engaging digital audiences.
  • Works various shifts, as assigned (including overnight and swing)
  • Maintains internal relationships with other members of the daily program staff and contributors to the daily program, as well as externally with information and program suppliers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and disseminate information and to coordinate daily news coverage.
  • A broad range of general news knowledge.
  • Demonstrated strong interest in digital media.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
  • Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and disseminate information and to coordinate daily news coverage.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, potentially on a regular rotation and to travel.

Editor II

  • At least six years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated skill in news-writing techniques.
  • Considerable skill in feature and copy editing.
  • At least two years of experience in editorial decision-making.

Editor III

  • Requirements of Editor II, plus:
  • At least eight years of experience as a reporter, editor or producer.
  • Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff in writing and radio story-telling
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate coverage on complex topics and execute multi-part/regular series with minimal editorial guidance.                                                                            

Preferred Skills:

  • Expertise in editing shows under breaking news conditions.
  • Experience copyediting commentary and less-experienced reporters.
  • Daily news experience.
  • Previous broadcast experience.
  • Experience in Digital Media, CMS.
  • Knowledge of audio production.
  • Experience editing on digital audio workstations.
