System Safety Engineer

The Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems Specialty Systems Engineering Department has an immediate opening for a Systems Safety Engineer with a strong working knowledge of systems / software development lifecycle , responsible for System Safety Engineering and Airworthiness support, to provide the engineering team with application of safety policies and guidance. The candidate will join our Specialty Engineering team of qualified, diverse individuals. The position will be located in Melbourne, FL.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Applies knowledge, methodologies and principles of safety engineering as defined in MIL-STD-882E and Joint Software System Safety Handbook;
  • Reviews product systems, associated support equipment and facilities, functional specifications and operations, and establishes safety requirements for assigned systems;
  • Independently analyzes and recommends safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards;
  • Develops requirements and designs, assess implementations for hazard and causal factors to satisfy critical system safety objectives;
  • Develops and evaluates systems, associated support equipment and facilities, networks and information systems to ensure designs meet applicable safety specifications and standards;
  • Support senior system safety engineers and collaborate with various design teams in the execution of various MIL-STD-882E analyses;
  • Applies engineering principles to investigate, analyze, plan, design, test, or evaluate military weapons systems;
  • Reviews and prepares engineering and technical analyses, reports, change proposals, and other technical documentation for system safety and in support of Airworthiness Certification IAW MIL-HDBK-516;
  • Familiar with architecture, requirements and interface artifacts for complex software systems;
  • Applies engineering experience to perform functions such as systems requirements analysis, functional analysis, timeline analysis, trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition, technical management, system integration, configuration management, quality assurance testing, or acquisition and resource management;
  • Experience working in Model Based Engineering (MBE) environment;
  • Perform software safety (Experience in AGILE SW development)




Basic Qualifications:
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain all required security clearances and program specific accesses
  • Ac tive DoD Secret (or higher) clearance in-scope
  • Master's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline with 0 years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline with 2+ years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college in Electrical/ Mechanical/ Aerospace/ Systems Engineering, or Computer Science, or equivalent;
  • Basic knowledge in System Safety and familiarity with Human Factors Engineering;
  • Military experience with complex aircraft design / operation;
  • Working knowledge of Military Standards and Practices: MIL-STD-882E, MIL-STD-1472G, MIL-HDBK-454B,and Joint Software Safety Engineering Handbook preferred;
  • Familiarity with FAA or Military Airworthiness Certification;
  • Familiarity with DO-178C and DO-254 Level A-C certifications;
