Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems is seeking a Satellite Systems Engineer to join the Flight Operations Team (FOT) for the Chandra program located in Burlington, MA (USA). The Chandra X-ray Observatory is the third of NASA's Great Observatories, continuously providing ground-breaking science.

The successful applicant will have two primary areas of responsibility:

  • Command Controller (20%)
  • Mission Planner (80%)
As Command Controller you will be a member of a two person team responsible for on-console satellite operations, including state-of-health assessments, issuing commands to the spacecraft, monitoring telemetry, and supporting contingency response.

As a Mission Planner you are primarily responsible for planning observatory pointing, science instrument commanding and engineering maintenance activities within vehicle capabilities and restrictions, and for generating command products required to accomplish these activities.

This role requires:
  • Extensive coordination with both the internal engineering team and the customer science planning team
  • Excellent problem solving skills, including the ability to navigate layered and sometimes conflicting priorities and constraints
  • Disciplined adherence to procedure and attention to detail
  • Becoming an expert in the use of flight tools for both spacecraft commanding and mission scheduling
  • Ground-system troubleshooting
  • Test and evaluation of Ground Software deliveries
For a successful team member, this role may expand to include:
  • NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) ground station scheduling
  • Flight dynamics support and analysis
  • Innovative definition/development of special purpose procedures and tools
  • Development of ground software tools to support Chandra scheduling or operations
As a member of this multidisciplinary group, the Command Controller/Mission Planner must have a strong technical aptitude and well-developed communication skills.

This position requires the ability to be on-call for rapid response to fast-turnaround operational activities and requires coverage of operational shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline (STEM) with a minimum two (2) years of professional engineering experience
  • Experience working with technical documentation/procedures
  • Capable of receiving and relaying information to internal and external customers
  • Requires both on-call duty for fast-turnaround operational activities and coverage of assigned operational shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays
Preferred Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience in a technical role, preferably in spacecraft operations and maintenance
  • Experience using, and fluidly switching between, online communications tools, including Slack, Google Chat/Meet, Microsoft Teams, or other similar tools
  • Ability to work and communicate remotely, external to the facility
  • Knowledge of Unix/Linux-based operating systems and scripting experience highly desirable
  • Capable of receiving and relaying information to internal and external customers
  • Able to collaborate in a team environment while negotiating and integrating different viewpoints
  • Familiarity with Python and/or MATLAB languages.
