This position is for a Functional Manager supporting the Mission Systems Marine Systems Hardware Engineering department in Sunnyvale, CA. The Mechanical Engineering Manager is responsible for both functional management and technical supervision of a Mechanical Engineering group.
This is a hybrid role balancing program technical demands and people management. Functional responsibilities include: ensuring the people, processes, and tools are in place to meet program cost, schedule, and technical performance requirements. The manager is responsible for staffing decisions, training, employee development, performance evaluation, compensation decisions, employee career development, and corrective or disciplinary actions when required.
Technical responsibilities include: technical oversight of the mechanical engineering of naval qualified hardware and systems. Areas of aptitude include: design of fabricated and machined components, rotating components such as gears, bearings and coupling, system integration, load path and stress analysis, and deflection analysis. The manager will be accountable for schedule, budget, and technical performance of mechanical engineering tasks. The manager will also be responsible for oversight of technical reviews, analysis and test reports, special projects, trade studies, sustaining activities, and customer reviews.
The functional manager also has performance appraisal responsibilities to guide employee development, improve employee well-being, and add value to the organization. As first line management for many employees, the functional manager will enhance and encourage employee development with career advice and training as well as notifying employees when suitable career advancement positions are available. The ideal candidate should have strong communications skills and the ability to connect to direct reports and internal customers on multiple levels.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering, Material Science or Physics from an accredited university.
- 5 + years of combined experience in mechanical engineering, design, structural analysis, and testing.
- Experience in leading projects
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance or higher.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering, Material Science or Physics. MBA highly desirable.
