Principal/Sr. Principal Engineer EHS

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector is seeking an EHS Engineer to join our Environmental, Health, Safety, and Fire Protection team. The selected applicant will be responsible for successfully implementing and managing all environmental, occupational health and safety-related programs at the Sector's Washington, D.C. metro area locations.

Key roles and responsibilities include:
  • Reviews and interprets existing and proposed environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations to determine applicability and impact for site.
  • Cover operations at multiple sector locations in the Washington, D.C. area.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains occupational health programs to ensure compliance, injury prevention, and risk mitigation.
  • Conducts job hazard assessments and recommends appropriate hazard control approaches.
  • Completes ergonomic assessments.
  • Conducts audits and identifies actions necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Partners with business leaders to continuously improve the culture, awareness and accountability in support of EHS programs.
  • Interfaces with regulatory representatives, senior management, the site EHS Committee, and the Emergency Response, and Crisis Management teams.
Additional roles and responsibilities may include:
  • Supports the site's environmental, safety, and fire protection programs.
  • Provides timely and accurate submission of necessary reports to the company and regulatory agencies.
  • Writes and updates EHS plans and procedures.
  • Applies for new permits and renewals.
  • Coordinates EHS training for employees and conducts instructor-led EHS training.
The position can be filled at a Level 3 or 4.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications for Level 3:
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in industrial hygiene, engineering, environmental science, or a related field, and a minimum of five years of experience; or a Master of Science (MS) in the same disciplines with two years of experience. The candidate must be willing to achieve the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification within three years of accepting this staff position.
  • Experience with managing various EHS compliance programs (based on the review and interpretation of EHS regulations.
  • Experience with overseeing third party consultants/contractors.
  • Ability to perform job duties with general direction and supervision and to provide technical solutions to complex problems based on sound industrial hygiene principles.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with all levels of an organization are a must.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in industrial hygiene, engineering, environmental science, or a related field, and a minimum of nine years of experience in the practice of industrial hygiene; or a Master of Science (MS) in the same disciplines with seven years of experience The candidate must be willing to achieve the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification within three years of accepting this staff position.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and to develop innovative solutions based on sound scientific principles.
  • Experience with managing various EHS compliance programs based on the review and interpretation of EHS regulations.
  • Experience with overseeing third party consultants/contractors.
  • Ability to perform job duties without appreciable direction and supervision.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with all levels of an organization are a must.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master of Science (MS) degree in an industrial hygiene, engineering, environmental science, or a related field, or currently enrolled in an M.S. degree program.
    Certifications in environmental or safety related programs.
  • Experience conducting industrial hygiene assessments documenting exposures to chemical, physical and biological agents.
  • Computer based skills specifically with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point programs.
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint and Tableau.
