Principal/Senior Principle Engineer Mechanical

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Marine Systems is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. Design Engineer researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This position focuses on rotating machinery design and general design engineering, including ship and submarine propulsion and power generation systems involving steam turbines, gearboxes and generator sets. Activities include developing new designs from concept, thru detailed design, manufacture and test phases. Job requirements also include supporting manufacturing activities on existing production contracts.

Travel will be required to support supplier and customer meetings.

This requisition may be filled at a level 3 or level 4 based on qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications for a Level 3:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) discipline with 5 or more years engineering experience; Masters of Science degree in a STEM discipline with 3 or more years experience
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance is required.
  • Computer skills including developing designs using solid modeling software, such as ProE is required.
  • A working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 drawing standards and geometric tolerance is also necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in an interactive group environment are essential.
  • Must be fluent in mechanical engineering principles, and must be proficient in developing design concepts, performing trades-studies, and conducting supporting evaluations and analyses.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.


Basic Qualifications for a Level 4:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) discipline with 9 or more years engineering experience; Masters of Science degree in a STEM discipline with 7 or more years experience
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance is required.
  • Computer skills including developing designs using solid modeling software such as ProE, is required.
  • A working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 drawing standards and geometric tolerance is also necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in an interactive group environment are essential.
  • Must be fluent in mechanical engineering principles, and must be proficient in developing design concepts, performing trades-studies, and conducting supporting evaluations and analyses.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Engineering Discipline.
  • 2 years experience in rotating machinery.
  • Local candidates preferred.
