Principal/Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer-Space Hardware

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Mechanical Technology and Design Services Department (located in Linthicum, MD) is seeking a motivated Principal Mechanical Engineer or a Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our high-performance team. The engineer will be supporting the design of space hardware for antennas / electro-optical sensors, sensor structures, electronics chassis, circuit card assemblies, modules, and electronic subassemblies and components. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will also be involved during all phases of space programs from inception through completion.

The specific near term need is to support a space program in production. The ideal candidate will have a strong ability to solve problems with mechanical hardware as it relates to electronics packaging for space environments.

Typical roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for understanding technical performance mechanical requirements of space program hardware or subsystems of major satellite programs to assure cost and schedule and technical performance is achieved.
  • Responsible for all aspects of hardware development. This will encompass all phases of design, including concept and detailed design development, documentation release, fabrication, integration, factory support and testing.
  • Present technical solution and technical data at milestone reviews.
  • Understand the integration and test process of space hardware and the special tooling that may be required.
  • Understand space environments and impact to space hardware.
  • Research and develop procedures, methods, and tools for testing space hardware conformance to documented and derived system requirements.
  • Sensitivity to cost, schedule and quality as well as Northrop Grumman policies and procedures is imperative.
  • Ability to successfully read and interpret schematics, block diagrams, sketches, oral and written instructions, manufacturer's specifications/operation manuals, and analyze hardware configurations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a cross-functional team with other engineers, management and contractors.
  • Support program meetings in developing root cause and corrective actions.
  • Troubleshoot or support technicians in troubleshooting issues with hardware designs during integration and test and provide suggestions for improvement and optimization.
  • Verify space equipment designs and performance by making necessary calculations.
This requisition may be filled as a Principal Mechanical Engineer or a Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer based on the qualifications listed below.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Mechanical Engineer:

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM field with 5 years of related experience or 3 years of related experience with a Master's Degree in STEM field.
  • Relevant space hardware design experience.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling.
  • Must possess an active DoD Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required Special Program Access.

Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer:
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM field with 9 years of related experience or 7 years of related experience with a Master's Degree in STEM field.
  • Relevant space hardware design experience.
  • 3D CAD modeling experience.
  • Must possess an active DoD Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required Special Program Access.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, or Systems Engineering
  • Proficiency with NX
  • Space mechanical system design experience working with systems engineering organization
  • A basic knowledge of space thermal and structural analysis and circuit card design
  • Experience designing custom precision parts and assemblies.
  • Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills
  • Experience with mechanical and/or electromechanical systems used to test hardware for a space environment.
