Principal Systems Engineer - Devens MA

Adaptive Optics Associates - Xinetics (AOX), a wholly-owned Northrop Grumman Space Systems (NGSS) Business Venture, is currently seeking a Principal Systems Engineer to support Xinetics program activities in Devens MA.

AOA-Xinetics designs, develops, and manufactures precision, advanced optical products and systems such as deformable mirrors, optical systems, adaptive optics control systems and silicon carbide optical structures for the U.S. Government, commercial customers, and U.S. defense prime and second-tier contractors. Markets for these technologies include civilian astronomy and semiconductor capital equipment as well as defense ISR and Directed Energy. Several potential direct and adjacent application areas also exist. The Company has substantial growth opportunities in support of many U.S. Government and NGSS business initiatives.

AOX delivers industrial photonics systems and development services for a variety of customers and applications. AOX excels in a range of applications from adaptive optical systems, deformable mirrors, wavefront sensors, precision actuators, to photonic systems that acquire and process data in real time for a variety of high availability applications. AOX's capabilities include lightweight passive and active hybrid CERAFORM silicon carbide optics and precision structures as well as large and small precision opto-mechanical systems supporting electronics and sophisticated controls software.

The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for the overall planning and execution of the engineering content of assigned programs. Working closely with the program team, the Systems Engineer performs System technical planning, requirements and interface management, performance analysis/trades, system integration, verification and validation, and risk management. Systems Engineering activities encompass the entire product life cycle and are performed within program technical, schedule, and cost constraints. The key attribute of the Systems Engineering role is to exhibit dynamic range, to be able to lead a team as well as perform as an individual contributor executing specific program tasks.

The Principal Systems Engineer will report directly to the Xinetics Engineering Manager. This position provides an exciting technical opportunity in a high-growth, strategically important business for NGSS. We are looking for an individual with exceptional people skills. Our ideal candidate can influence and motivate a team to perform at higher levels, has excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills; must be highly influential in conversation and have a record of collaborative approach with peers/peer organizations. Specific position responsibilities are as follows:

Direct Responsibilities:
Engineering team lead
Project technical planning
Requirements and interface development, decomposition, analysis, refinement, allocation, verification and validation
Coordinates/conducts System performance analysis and trade studies
Supports/executes modeling and simulation activities
Develops and maintains product technical baseline
Customer technical interface
Gate review technical lead (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR)
Develops integration, test, verification and validation plans
Interfaces with customers, peers, management, and other organizations (ie PMO, manufacturing, quality, outside suppliers)
Works with the Business Area Manager, Program Managers and other technical personnel on quotes, proposals and responses to customer technical inquiries
Lead problem investigator
Travel to customer and supplier sites as required
Learn existing business related technologies, keep up to date with new emerging technologies for integration into product portfolio
Risk and opportunity management
Controls engineering project scope. Understands what is within the project scope and identifies when tasks are outside of the established baseline

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

B.S. degree in Engineering or Physics

1 - 5 years of experience in optics and/or photonics PREFERRED, not required

Strong familiarly with systems containing optical, mechanical, electrical, and software components

Possesses thorough knowledge of optical and photonics principles and applications

System requirements management experience

Preparing and executing detailed program reviews

Possess superior analytical and problem-solving skills

Ability to operate independently with limited supervision and feedback,

The ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, division managers, manufacturing, quality, and peers in the business areas

Great problem prevention and troubleshooting skills, root cause/corrective action experience

Ability to lead teams

Excellent communication skills

Experience executing systems engineering tasks

U.S. Citizenship is a bona fide requirement of employment at AOX/NG

Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Engineering or Business Management

5 or more years experience in optics/photonics

Experience in DoD, Aerospace, Semiconductor Fab and/or COTs product development and manufacturing

FMEA experience

DoD Top Secret Clearance

Working Environment & Physical Demands:

Position is located at AOX Devens, MA

Occasional travel to supplier and customer sites

Ability to handle very fragile, very expensive objects without damaging them

Ability to sit for extended periods of time and light physical effort
