Principal Safety System Engineer

Northrop Grumman Technology Services is seeking a Principle Safety System Engineer to provide safety engineering support to the Unmanned Systems Integration Center Depot in Sierra Vista, Arizona, as well as flight lines in the area, in support of the Hunter Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) program.

The selected candidate is expected to be self-directed and leverage previous experience to effectively lead Hunter system safety efforts. As the functional lead for this area, the prospective candidate should have extensive experience in system safety, as duties will include leading and performing activities. Furthermore, the candidate should have ample experience across the full program lifecycle, from concept development through operations. The prospective functional lead will be expected not only to lead and perform program activities, but also to mentor engineers to help grow our collective expertise in the department.

The responsibilities of the selected candidate will include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying, tracking, and mitigating software and system hazards within the hazard tracking system
  • Creating and maintaining a system safety program plan
  • Creating CDRL safety deliverables
  • Creating a Functional Hazard Assessment
  • Generating Software Criticality Indexes from software hazards
  • Generating Risk Assessment Codes from system hazards
  • Lead internal system and software safety working groups
  • Attend government system safety working groups
  • Perform safety analysis on system and software requirements
  • Support cost and budgeting for safety related tasks

Additionally, the selected individual is expected to provide interaction with senior management, technical lead, team lead, quality assurance, and non-technical stakeholders on a regular basis.


Basic Qualifications:
5 plus years of relevant experience with Bachelors in Science OR 3 plus years with Masters OR 0 plus years with PhD.
3 years relevant safety experience
Understanding of both system and software safety practices
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Visio, and Project
Ability to travel approximately 10% to domestic locations.
Active Secret clearance or higher, OR ability to obtain and maintain Secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
Strong verbal and technical writing skills
Safety experience on software centric systems
Safety experience on Hunter UAS or other UAS platforms
Experience with MIL-STD-882E
Familiarity with databases
Strong software background
