Power Supply Design Engineer 3/4

Northrop Grumman Mission Systemsis seeking a design engineer to join a team designing power supplies and power conversion for military applications. This position is located in Baltimore, MD with the Power Conversion Technology department within Hardware Engineering. Minimal travel may be required.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Power Systems Design Development including power systems architecture, power budget creation and management, trade studies, detailed design of Printed Wiring Boards (PWBs),bus bars, interconnects, and/or cabling.
  • Management of voltage drop and ripple budgets.
  • Power Supply Design including requirements development, conceptual, preliminary and detailed design, design verification, and production support.
This is a Dual Band Position and can be filled at aBand 3 or 4 based on the Basic Qualifications listed below.
Basic Qualifications for Band 3:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years relevant industry experience or M.S. in Engineering with a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience
  • Experience with power electronics design, manufacturing, or testing
  • DxDesigner and Expedition for schematic capture and printed wiring board development
  • Works well in a team environment
  • Standard MS Office software, e.g. MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance
Basic Qualifications for Band 4:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 9 years relevant industry experience or M.S. in Engineering with a minimum of 7 years relevant industry experience
  • Experience with power electronics design, manufacturing, or testing
  • DxDesigner and Expedition for schematic capture and printed wiring board development
  • Works well in a team environment
  • Standard MS Office software, e.g. MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiar with common isolated topologies such as ZVS Phase Shifted Full Bridge, Flyback, and Half-Bridge
  • Familiar with point of load (POL) design and non-isolated topologies, such as buck, buck-boost, and boost
  • Familiar with control methods, such as voltage mode control and average/peak current mode control
  • Familiar with power supply EMI/EMC filtering and design
  • Experience with power supply testing and ability to troubleshoot hardware failures
  • Experience with modeling and simulation of power conversion circuits
  • Experience with printed wiring board and circuit card assembly layout for power conversion circuits
  • Digital control experience
  • Active power factor correction design experience
  • Magnetic component design experience
  • High voltage design experience (up to 200 kV)
  • SABER and LTSpice simulation tools for modeling and simulation of power conversion circuits
  • Working knowledge of power related Mil-Stds for power quality and electromagnetic interference
  • Lab skills including High voltage safety training for design verification.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance
