Payload Field Engineer 3
Northrop Grumman Mission Systems/Engineering, Manufacturing, and Sciences - Western Region has an Outside of the Continental United States (OCONUS) position for an Engineer Field 3 / Network Engineer to support a military communications program. This program involves current tactical aircraft mission coordination of the network systems at various OCONUS locations. The Resilient Networks Solutions (RNS) organizational unit develops and fields systems and infrastructures to connect disparate systems and enable network-centric operations. The Contingency Deployment Operations (CDO) department operates and sustains the fielded systems and is where this position resides.
Northrop Grumman is seeking an experienced Linux / VMware/IP Network System Administrator to support an RNS program OCONUS team. The field network engineer will be part of a deployed team operating a complex tactical system providing voice and data services at operational locations inside and outside the continental United States. Duties include physical and system administration and maintenance of the ground and airborne node portions of a network communications system to include routers, switches, servers, clients, virtual machines, and network attached storage devices.
The candidate will work closely with the Military/Government customer as well as internal Northrop Grumman Integrated Product Teams (IPTs). The successful candidate must have the ability to solve technical problems of increasing scope and complexity primarily focused on Linux, VMware and IP networking. Advanced knowledge of Linux and VMware operating systems is required. The engineer will be expected to build, operate, maintain, troubleshoot and support the maintenance, system administration and upgrades to the Linux / VMware components of the payload. This position requires advanced knowledge of Red Hat Linux (RHEL), SELinux, Red Hat Directory Server, VMware ESXi and the VMware Infrastructure client. The incumbent will be expected to troubleshoot BIOS issues, work daily with RAID arrays, cabling, and chassis hardware. Candidate shall have practical experience with commercial off the shelf (COTS) network equipment (including routers and switches), cabling, and connectors and must also have a functional understanding of network topologies. A working knowledge of, and experience with Cisco IP networking and general computing is a plus for the successful candidate. The candidate must be able to use standard desktop computer and Windows based tools to produce or edit documents including drawings, plans, procedures and reports. The candidate may be assigned to perform other additional duties as required in support of the 24/7 deployed operational network. Experience with military COMSEC such as High Assurance IP Encryptor (HAIPEs) is a plus.
Typical Minimum Education / Experience: 5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD. Six (6) or more years of experience with the repair, configuration, troubleshooting and operations of network devices and computer systems. Six (6) or more years of experience and commercial certifications, such as CCNA, may be substituted for a degree. Candidate must be willing to work extended hours to meet deadlines. Candidate must be willing to travel up to 75% of the time outside the continental United States. Extended travel to hazardous overseas duty locations is required. Candidate must also have the ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and accurately in an active voice. The physical ability to easily maneuver around equipment in test labs and aircraft is required.
DOD 8570 IAT Level II or greater certification (Security ) and CISCO certification.
This position requires a final SECRET level security clearance.
Will include a combination of in-depth system administration experience with Linux, VMware and Windows 2008 Server and Windows 7 Professional, general experience with Cisco based IP networks, general computing and a working knowledge of military COMSEC, MIDS, SADL and communications radio hardware. Experience working on and around aircraft and understanding of airborne equipment installation operation, maintenance and testing procedures and processes is highly desirable.
