Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems is seeking a Mechanical Test Engineer 3 to work in Redondo Beach, California. This Mechanical Test Engineer 3 will be supporting the James Webb Space Telescope team. 2nd shift and weekend support is expected.

The ideal candidate will be required to apply engineering principles to contribute to the timely planning and execution of mechanical integration and test of the James Webb Space Telescope, including reading and understanding engineering drawings, specifications, plans, and requirements documents. This individual will author test products/ detailed work procedures to implement and comply with these documents, as well as interact across engineering disciplines to clarify requirements and understand limitations, constraints, and potential conflicts. He/She must interact across organizations to coordinate readiness for task execution including facilities, personnel, non-flight hardware/ equipment, flight hardware, configuration. The Mechanical Test Engineer 3 will support problem resolution, paperwork closeout, and requirements verification. Previous technical working experience with CAPE, Solumina and Enovia is strongly preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Update work procedures to incorporate lessons learned and any changes to governing documents
  • Provide mechanical test engineering support to the factory floor for clarification, troubleshooting, work procedure modification, post-test critique, break-of-configuration review, and review and evaluation of test data
  • Provide feedback regarding impacts of possible cost and/ or schedule changes
  • Work and execute independently with some technical oversight
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on best practices

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelors of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution and5 years of engineering experience in an aerospace environment OR
  • Masters of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution and3 years of engineering experience in an aerospace environment
  • Practical working experience with test products, implement work procedures, and comply with work regulations
  • Active In-Scope DoD Secret Security Clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience working on and executing actionables on the James Webb Space Telescope
  • Experience with CAPE or Solumina
  • Technical experience with CPATS and experience on ERTs
  • Possesses strong leadership qualities, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills
