Mechanical Engineering Manager

AOA Xinetics (AOX) is seeking a dynamic Engineering Manager for its Special Business Area located in East Hartford, CT. AOA Xinetics, part of Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Products business unit, is a leader in developing challenging, mission critical electro-optical and opto-mechanical systems. Across its three Business Areas (Xinetics, Image Metrology and Special Programs), AOX designs, manufactures and services optical & photonic solutions world-wide for both the industrial and government markets.

The Engineering Manager will work with other engineering managers and program managers across the three business areas to develop and enhance critical technical capabilities that drive our businesses. The successful candidate will work closely with their direct reports and business area leaders to develop engineering talent, tools, and processes, while also working closely with peer departments in manufacturing, quality, and program management. The Engineering Manager will be responsible for delivering value primarily through expertise in mechanical engineering in a team oriented and customer focused environment.

The Engineering Manager will report directly to the Engineering Manager, Special Programs. Specifically, the details of the position are the following:

Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs as a working manager (~50% direct labor) of 5-20 engineers with mechanical engineering expertise
  • Is responsible for the technical performance of the Mechanical Engineering Group, Special Programs
  • Will be an individual contributor with regards to their engineering specialty on critical programs

  • Report to the Engineering Manager, Special Programs
  • Support improvement initiatives, including employee engagement
  • Work with the Engineering Manager, Special Programs, to establish, maintain, encourage, and enforce common design practices, standards, and policies in the Mechanical engineering discipline
  • Hire staff to establish and maintain a broad range of capabilities across the business area that meets the area's overall needs and objectives
  • Identify training for staff to support a broad range of capabilities across the company as well as employee growth
  • Work collaboratively with Program Managers within the overall framework of the organization
    • Be able to make recommendations on employee fits for programs
    • Identify gaps in capabilities with individuals and the organization
    • Provide opportunities for employee growth (achieving career goals) where appropriate
    • Resolve employee performance issues
  • Contribute technically to programs as assigned
    • If an individual contributor, work the task(s) assigned
    • If a task manager on a program, manage the task with the resources assigned
  • Encourage and provide for cross program exchange of information (as allowable, e.g. security restrictions)
  • Be an active and engaged manager; know what programs employees are working on and generally their tasks on those programs
  • Provide general management, motivation, guidance, and support to assigned staff
    • Performance reviews

    • Training to staff on company tools and processes (e.g. purchasing, timecards, etc.)
    • Tools, equipment, software, etc.
  • Employee engagement is a critical responsibility of the Manager
  • Support the Capital procurement process by recommending tools, test equipment, and facilities, needed to support the organization

  • Work and collaborate with the Engineering Manager, Business Area Manager, Program Managers and other technical personnel on quotes, proposals and responses to customer technical inquiries. Includes technical and resource analysis of RFP's and SOW's as well as identifying risks and appropriate risk mitigation strategies

  • Work with AOA Xinetics leadership and compliance functions to ensure full compliance with Division, Corporate, and government policies
  • Travel as needed to customer locations to support design and program reviews

  • Attend meetings, seminars, symposiums and shows as a technical representative of AOA Xinetics

  • Other duties as assigned


Basic Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of mechanical engineering
  • B.S. degree in Engineering and 10 years' experience
  • Have a significant history of technical achievements along with demonstrated successes in engineering supervisory and project management roles
  • Possess leadership skills to develop, organize and execute engineering activities, including building teams, and assessing technical performance
  • Experience preparing and executing detailed program reviews; developing and managing engineering processes and standards; coordinating engineering services, infrastructure and tools; and planning and development of engineering budgets and staffing
  • Strong critical thinking and logical reasoning skills and the ability to apply them to solve issues and predict potential technical risks
  • Good working knowledge of desktop/laptop computers, MSOffice tools, VPN as required to accomplish responsibilities
  • Conducts business with impeccable ethics; leads by example and fosters ethical behavior at all times
  • Maintains a positive and professional working environment
  • Have experience recruiting engineering talent
  • Possess superior analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and feedback, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, division managers, and peers in the business areas
  • Active TS/SSBI clearance


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A MS degree and/or PhD in a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience in optomechanical design and development
  • 5 years supervisory experience
